Hi just bought myself a polo 6n2 few months ago. Found it required new wishbones, drop links, top mounts and front brakes, so i decided to buy a set of prosport coilovers and fit them while doing all this as the arch gap is crazy big. I have never fitted coilovers before so i am unsure if i am just being stupid or not. 

When fitted i counted the threads on the front coilovers and counted 14 from bottom each side, however after taking it out last night i noticed passenger side was rubbing so i took wheels back off today and raise is by another 6 each side and passenger side was still rubbing, back off and raised only the passenger side it doesn't appear to be rubbing but just concerned as unsure as to why it needs raised more than the drivers side, only difference is i was only sent 1 new top mount so i have fitted it to drivers side as it was buggered will fit new one of passenger side once arrives, surely this wouldn't cause it to be alot lower? Also seems really bouncy and it wasn't until i fitted them i realised i should have primed them before installing, will this cause a issue? 

Only other thing I noticed is the fact that the front coilovers don't seem to have the helper springs and backs do, would this make a difference and also are they meant to come with them if not does anyone know if can purchase them separately? Ovbiously i know it would help them to sit in place better as its a little scary when lowering off jack and hear it jumping into position. 

Have yet to do the alignment as don't want to go ahead and do it the now as no point in possibly going to be taking apart again. 

Also fitted new front pads and discs to the car as the brakes felt rather non existent and discs were completely shagged, doesn't seem to have improved them that much, do you think maybe just a full bleed would help sort this out, having never owned a polo before not sure if maybe just not as good brakes as other cars I have owned.

Hello, first of all where in Scotland are you from? 

 

As for the coilovers being different heights that is nothing to be worried about but the new Vs old top mount won't be helping matters. Counting the threads on the coils is a good way to set up the initial height on installation but for the fine adjustment I usually measure from the ground to the top of the arch to get the car as level as possible.

 

The helper springs are only there to help keep the spring located when the car is jacked up. They don't do anything for the ride quality as they are fully compressed when the car is on the ground. But if your spring is loose when the car is jacked up that is an MOT fail. So a helper spring would be needed. You can buy them on their own, possibly from eBay or Rally Design or even ProSport if you contact them. You'll just need to know the spring diameter you'll need.

 

As for the alignment I'd get that done as soon as, even if you have to get it double checked when you fit the new top mount or helper springs etc. otherwise you run the risk of chewing through a set of front tyres at an alarming rate. A wheel alignment is cheaper than 2 new front tyres!

 

Finally the brakes, one thing that is often overlooked is fluid and flexi lines. It is very possible that the fluid in the system is years old and the same for the flexi lines. Both are cheap new and will improve the feel of the brakes dramatically.

Tried contacting prosport and no reply as of yet! Raised the car a little today and passenger side is about 12-15 more threads higher than drivers and still slight rub so definitely going to get the new top mount ordered asap and wheel alignment done ?

 

As for the brakes had wheels off quickly today when was raising and I noticed that seems as if only part of the brakes are braking if that makes sense? Any idea what would cause this, everything seems fine, only thing I noticed was there was no grub screws on discs could this be partly to blame.

When does the rubbing happen and can you see where the tyre is rubbing? What size of wheels/tyres do you have?

 

So you mean the pads are wearing unevenly? This is likely down to sticky or seized slider pins. Ideally you should have taken those out and given them a clean and greased them up when you were doing the brakes. The grub screw not being there won't make a difference, it is just to make life easy when fitting the discs and locating the wheels. Once the wheels are on the disc will sit flat against the hub.

On the passenger side it is scrubbing against the inner wheel arch liner i am sitting on 15inch alloys pretty sure they are 195 45 15.

 

We had to fit new caliper bolts as they were rounded so almost positive we greased everything before putting back on, it is as if the top and bottom of the pads are braking but the middle of them are not, will attach a photo of a disc and highlight in black where the pads appear to braking. 

 

Had to raise the car the other night as went away for a work event and since raising there is alot of creaking coming off the drivers side which is the one with new top mount, starting to get annoyed with it as seems loads of noises since fitting haha. I am contacting vw to get new bolts for everything that was taken when doing just incase this is causing an issue. Raised the car so that the springs were near enough solid against the top mount but feel as though the new top mount isn't sitting right as other one seems to stay up in place where this one just moves around on top of spring
