I'm sure this question has been asked a million times but what are the best wheel sizes to go on a mk2f standard hub and what is the best calipers and discs to upgrade to on a standard hub, it is a 1.3 non gt.

This is all personal preference but for me 13s are the best wheel size to get for as the choice of Polo friendly tyres are vast. Whereas going up to 14s or 15s you limit yourself to just a couple choices especially if you want something that grips well.

Brakes, upgrading to VW11 calipers (found on the G40 or mk2 Golf) is one of the easiest and best upgrades you can do. The calipers will bolt straight on to your existing carriers and after that the discs and pads are no more expensive than before as they are pretty much the same just the discs are vented instead of solid. 

Something that is always overlooked on these is the age of all the other braking components. Everyone complains about rubbish brakes, but 99% of the time they have just changed the discs and pads and nothing else. So potentially still running on 20+ year old fluid and lines. Renewing the whole system with fresh fluid and lines will make a massive difference to how the brakes feel and perform

Thanks for that info, would that be mk2 golf gti brakes? Once I have it stripped I would probably change all the lines and fluid anyway. 

GTI 8v or even some of the lesser 1.6 models I believe had them too. Don't go for the 16v brakes though as they are bigger and aren't a direct fit.

The VWll calipers can also be found on the 6N1/2,  Seat Ibiza, and a few other VAG models
