Bought this all original G40 3 or 4 years ago. Had MOT and was pretty solid underneath. Around 150k on the clocks, two owners from new - been with one family most it's life. Drove it around for a while replacing the usual components:

Had a spark starting issue which I traced back to the ECU relay block - really corroded. This is a common with these cars.

Replaced the coil with a Lucas item, new Bosch dizzy, Bosch W5 DP0 plugs, leads and Bosch lamda sensor. Amounting to a small fortune. Having done this it ran very strong and felt quick even in standard guise.

It soon became apparent that the running gear was shot, so I took it off the road to give it the love it deserved.

I did get around to doing all the front suspension at some point. Fitted new genuine springs from Classic parts.de with Koni damper inserts, new genuine Track control arms from the same guys, pulled out a pair of Powdercoated legs which have swapped cars a few times now; but never been used. These were equipped with new vag bearings, got a pair of splash guards Powdercoated, fitted an overhauled caliper setup with Matt Lewis Racing aeroquip lines and new genuine top mounts. Opted for Superflex front arb bushes as they were pretty well priced and figured they wouldn't detract from the originality of the car.

Will get some pics of the front suspension at some point.

Anyway having not done anything with it in some time I got it up on stands tonight, removed the rear wheels then ran out of tools as they're all at home.

Poor thing needs a wash!

Earlier works.

Loads planned. Rear beam is coming off to be overhauled. I have a decent one on the wife's mk2 which I might rob back to save some work.

Have both fuel pumps, which will be changed. Sort any underlying rust; there's a bit around the windscreen and the battery tray needs sorting. Doors need replacing - I have a spare pair in black along with wings (although I made a mess of one of my spare wings). Then once it's in reasonable shape may get it resprayed.

Gearbox has dumped its oil slowly all over the nice painted floor. Will pull that out and swap it for a spare and give the engine a once over.

nice... G40 rear beam has an antiroll strengthening rod. So unless yours is really rotten, your wife's mk2 beam won't be as good.

Gearbox is probably just the selector shaft seal... and can be replaced with box attached (ideally drained).

Thanks. I've previously changed the rear beam on my wife's car for a G40 beam which I'd had Powdercoated.

Having driven it for a year or so; it seems to drive pretty straight.

As for the gearbox; it feels pretty crunchy anyway. Going to swap it for a spare ATV and get the original rebuilt eventually.
