well fully comp is always going to be best really, but depends on your budget mate!

Insurance is all about risk assessment. You see a risk and then you cover it. I'm fully comp because there are too many tools out there with no insurance and if they crash into my car then I'm fooked!!

It's a decision that you have to come to based on your budget, circumstances and other factors, and this includes the difference between the premium for fully comp and TPFT. In some cases the difference isn't actually that much, particularly if you break it down into monthly payments.

I was TPFT on my first car, then I stuffed it into the back of a lorry and wrote it off. The accident, although caused by the lorry doing an emergency stop, was my fault because I was too close. If my dad hadn't baled me out by buying me a crap renault to replace the car, I'd have been buggered.

I'm going fully comp on my 16v, because if i have an accident my car wont be covered will it?

I bumped my first car into the back of someone..thankfully my dad repaired the whole front end for me.

if I'm driving a shed-3rd party

car worth around a grand-tpft

expensive car-fully comp

thats how i do it

fully comp as there is little in it and at least if heaven forbid were to happen I would get some money back ...plus means I can drive friends vehicles and have 3rd party on them if needs be ...plus insurance will be minimal after our move anyway ....£16 a month lol ....flippin breakdown recovery is more as I lunched out me no claims on that while the head gasket was slowly and gracefully dying

Are you sure about that??

If you have an accident with an uninsured driver and you are TPFT you stand a good chance of claiming off the motor insurance bureau and it not affecting your no-claims.

If your fully comp you can't do this, you have to claim on your policy and it affects your no-claims :(

I'm not sure I'm 100% right on this one, but I'm staying 3rd party for that reason....

I had some first hand experience of this - someone sideswiped my Golf in the middle of the night a few years ago while it was parked on the street - no witnesses - no clue as to who did it - I came out the following morning to find the damage. I asked about the MIB and was told I would only be able to claim for personal injury losses. There weren't any of those because I was asleep in bed at the time of the accident, and so the claim had to come off my insurance.

get quotes for both. If the fully comp will cost you more than the car is worth then it's a waste of time. I don't bother insuring my daily drivers fully comp as I only tend to pay a few hundred for them anyway. I figure that if I crash I'll just sell off the parts from the car and probably make my money back anyway.

The G is a different story though. I've spent far too much on that to drive it around without fully comp, agreed value insurance.

another thing tho ....fully comp means you can drive someone elses car third party which is a plus point for those of us right out in the sticks who just run one vehicle

the difference for me was minimal between third party and fully comp ...but I am an old bat lol

also insurance company will take into account any recent work you have had done if a payout is needed apparently and I don't want to ever have to find that out ...the windscreen replacement was enough for me ...some bloke I didn't know from Adam working on me Polo ....

I can drive other cars on my TPFT policy....

I wasn't aware that tpft allowed that ....don't think it is all policies everywhere F.x

Yeah I don't think its an automatic thing, but I remember asking about it and it says I can on my certificate.

Oh well one of the joys of being over 25....

benefits to being an old git perhaps ....in any case need to phone direct line and tell them I have moved and they owe me some money back ...the breakdown recovery is gonna be more than the flippin insurance for me as I had the head gasket slowly and peacefully die including two call outs, plus ones when the igniton lock went too ...life eh

having fully comp doesn't automatically mean you can drive other peoples cars either. A lot of policies let you and they'll specifically say so in the certificate. Some tpft policies allow you to do as well.

But it's becoming less and less common because insurance companies have cottoned onto young drivers insuring old sheds but then driving around in their parents high powered cars all the time.

which annoys me no end when many of us drive what are assumed to be old sheds and sometimes need for practical reasons to drive our friends similar older but loved vehicles ....anyway it is ok on my policy and I don't want a high powered car which is expensive to run and maintain ...my taste of speed and power was Polly the Proton aged 11 lol borrowed from the garage while my teenager had her head gasket done ...
