Hi All, This is my first post so... Hi All... Treat me well please.

 

I have a mk2 Classic (Saloon) 1989, good little 1.0L 5 speed with only 42000 on the clock.

 

Apologies... I started this project 5 years ago but due to house move etc has been put on back burner until a friend gave me a Good old kick up the arse the other day.

 

I have done quite alot of work including, Coilovers, Stage 2 subframe, poly bushed TCS's, ARB Blocks.. Lots more that i've forgotten about too.

 

But I have hit a problem that my friend has no idea on.... (Which is never heard of)

 

I tried to correct the tracking the weekend, I understand how the polo works. But it seems that the adjustable Tracking Bar is too short.

 

i.e. Once wound out to correct to the Toe, there is only about 3 or 4 threads left  inside the Bar. Which I don't like.... 

 

Has anybody ever come across this before? 

 

I will try and take some photos tonight.

Interesting. Wonder if it is a Frankenstein from several cars?

 

I measure the inner threaded tube as 335mm between inner edge of both lock-nuts.

i think the mk2 has a slieghtly different suspension from the 2f and you may have a 2f tie rod 

 

if im right the 2f is a revised version and marginally shorter tie rods and control arms 

 

 

Maybe, but I can't find any evidence for that.

 

This is the straight adjustable passenger's side tie-rod assembly you are talking about.

If it's the bent rod, then LHD and RHD are different bend angles and LHD is usually cheaper.

 

According to rexbo the outer tie-rod end should be 110mm long - but not sure if that's measured from cone to threaded end (10mm thread) or elsewhere.

I see mk2 and mk2f total lengths of 511mm.

I think this was part of the 1984 revisions on the mk2. Can't quite remember the details though because it's been years. From memory, the rack's the same, but it's the bracket that goes between the rack and the rods and like you say, the adjustable rod that's different. I think a late rod on an early car makes it toe out about a mile.

That sounds about right, it would make sense. With it wound out to the max there is still some adjustment needed as the toe is out a mile.  I measured the bar at lunch and it's between 320mm and 335mm (Hard to measure on your own). 

 

Would there be any other tell tale signs its a late mk2 version? 

 

 

Not a clue to be honest, I seem to remember the early adjustable rods are discontinued everywhere, so maybe easier to get a bracket off a late car. Unless you know someone with a thread cutting lathe, then it'll be a 30 second job for them to knock one up.
