Just a question and I know it's a stupid one but has anyone actually put a 5 speed in a 1.0? Any advantages?

I am interested also as I have a 8p 5 speed box I would like to link up with a 1Ltr.

the advantage would be more relaxed high speed cruising and reduced noise /fuel consumption

 

no downsides to it if you use a suitable box

Right okay, I might buy a 5speed box off a gt. 

The 1.0 did have an option of a 5 speed gearbox and it was pretty much the same as a GT gearbox.

I have driven a 1.0 with a CEG (same as 8P) and to be honest it wasn't great. 3rd, 4th and 5th are so long there is no power to pull them really. Yes it revs lower at motorway cruising speeds but I doubt that has that much effect on fuel economy if the car is running right and everything is healthy enough.

Such a Shame I have an 8p box doing nothing and was going to change over when I do my engine 1ltr change over. 

Just use 1st, 2nd and 5th?

 

A long time but occasional driver of the Formel E which had a 3+E gearbox gets ~43 mpg

Though he does a fair bit of city driving so the start stop automatic might help. Ah, but it is the 1982 with 1093cc

so no SSA. That came on the 1.3 Formel E.

 

But a motorsport writer from 1983 did not achieve even 40mpg

Well I won't bother then, was hoping better fuel consumption. 

So just to confirm its not worth changing to my spare 5 speed 8p gear box  ?  instead of the 4 speed while my engine is out .

Depends on the engine, if it's a 1.05, I wouldn't do it. 

 

The 8P was geared so that on a 55hp 1.3, the 5th (or E gear as it was marked) was basically an overdrive, meaning the car can't really accelerate in that gear or hit a higher top speed than in 4th. It's find the speed you want to be at in 4th, then chuck it in 5th.

Yes its a 1ltr with 4 speed at the moment.

I'd stick with it to be fair. The 1 litre 5 speed wasn't a lot higher geared in real terms, nor was the GT really. 

OK advice taken on board I shall stick with the 4 speed gearbox.
