Just bought this for £150 in Gourdon in aberdeenshire  




Only issue is I bought it for £150 as the engine does not turn so I think its throwen a rod inside 101k miles on a 1.2 6v engine so its been ragged I think but its a nice little project, 

One of the spark plugs is jammed in the head and just cross threading going round and round but the eletrodes are touching on these two that came out so something catastrophic has well gone wrong inside or the spark plugs have been to long and punched the piston crounds on top and bent a rod or two. 

Cam followers on the head and combined rocker cover have deep groves on them so the engine has had a serious hammering with very few oil changes it seems. 

Looks like its a new 2nd hand engine before I've even taken the thing apart. 

I taken the front end off night before so it gave me a head start on the polo's AWY engine.

Ohh it seems one piston has done a Paul Daniels on me

And 2 valves are missing as well

What was left of the internal contents of 2 valves, Piston crown's, and bits of cylinder head. 

All 3 rods are bent 

So looks like there will be a new engine for this polo now. 
 

Bet that made a bit of a noise! 

 

Well, on the plus side, it's not the sort of fault that leaves you wondering whether to fix it or buy a new one. 

I've heard stories of these engines self destructing but that has fairly eaten itself alive!

Bit of a mad one! I've heard the same of those engines too. Well you could always chuck in a PD engine instead or a GTI so it's not all bad lol

Bought a BMD engine online for £80 and partly rebuilt it with valve guides new seals, used all bits off the other engine that I could use.

Painted the engine mount orange for fun same with battery clamp  

Got it in now and got it running, Sounds a little too loud tho on top end, Very chappy :( 

Fixed the chappy top end and its running superb now but its started running lumpy so I think a coil pack maybe on its way out. 

Forgot to tighten the bolt for the oil pump gear so pulley was slipping round on bolt and it gave me no oil pressure :(
At least its fixed now tho  lol

Well its running nice now after replacing a crank sensor and all 3 spark plugs but its a little smokey so useing old valve guides was a bit of a retard move on my part :( 

All see how the car runs just now but for the moment am happy with how things are going.

Put new valve guides in and slapped it all together and its now worse than before for smokeing oil at rear, Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr :( 

Engine is in bits once more, Bores are glazed inside.

Says in haynes not to take apart the engine but really I had no choice. 

It could be bollocks, but I seem to remember the reason you don't take them apart is they stressed (basically stretched) the engine somehow when they put them together.  Seems a bit odd, but ali blocks never were VW's strong suit. 

Well had it together few nights ago and had the car running today and it started smokeing out rear and head gasket has gone bang now so am just gonna lay the car up for another engine now, Am not wasting any more cash on a lump of alloy shit. 

Bigger engine transplant for sure now ;D 

I've pissed about £200 something quid on a 1.2 6v with less than 4 miles on the clock after 3 major rebuilds. 

Gonna study the following engines from the 1J golf platform and see what easyist to fit and most fun ( money no object project )
 

1.9TDI or 1.8T? Depends whether you like torque or revs. Both very doable because they were used in the 9n/3 and shared platform cars anyway. 

Just bought another AWY engine for £100 so all see how that goes but I at least got to hear it before it came out the car

Could you see any weak point.

Yeah 3rd time lucky now car runs perfect with a BDM engine is quite pokey as well for its size. 
AWY Engine I did have in it am going to tear it down sometime and find out what went wrong.

Window wipers have gotten really slow and have stopped all together now so all need to find the cause of that issue.
Oil sensor says theres low oil but is above the level so all need to figgure out how to clean or reset it.

Is it possible I own the worst 9N polo,

It does sound cursed. But you've now got a better engine. 

 

probably wiper motor brushes. replacement motor?

 

 

Apparently the wiper issue has been covered before on uk-polos.net, Wiper spindle can seaze up due to water dripping on it and slowing it down. Plus the fact the car used to live next to the sea has not helped :/ 

Well after fixing the wipers thinking all the problems had stopped I was on my way to Dundee when power steering had stopped working then the abs and airbag light came on and lost all lights and everything all at once, Turns out the alternator was failty so after that came off and went flying round the garage I robbed the other one off my other engine and the polo is like a new car now is no longer cursed as dvderlm said  lol

Always satisfying to exorcise the demons.

Drove it to Kelty on Wedensday from Arbroath and back, Used a bit of fuel but everything seems fine now for once.
