So I have a base model 9n3, I love the car but it doesn't have an aux port. For the last 18month I have been using a Belkin Radio transmitter to create a local radio station that I can tune my cars stock radio into and play music from my phone.

My current setup is low-quality, ugly and needs replacing.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the most seamless and effective way of playing my own music through the in built car stereo? I'd really like to be able to also use it as a hand free system so that I can answer the phone on long journeys however this is not essential.

In my mind I'd like to cut the wires down to one or even zero if possible however I am on a budget.

I got a wiring harness that was made for the polo (6n) and everything is plug and play (I think it's included in the box, but if not halfords has one). It has Bluetooth, and USB. Can answer calls, play music and audiobooks via the phone.

You could always pop in to halfords and see what they've got, plenty of choice for a decent price.

To get an idea, I still have this radio now and use it weekly, it must be going on 7 years now.

Another option, would be a parott I9200 it is a a great bit of kit ( got one in my car) apart from handsfree phone calls, it comes with 4 other possible aux inputs, you can put a SD card of MP3 into the display unit and play from that or the main aux lead has an Apple 30 pin, 3.5mm jack & a USB connector for a memory stick of MP3 files. New they are expensive, I bought a used one on eBay quite cheap :)

  

If it's a head unit that's set up to control a disc changer, then you can normally get an aux-in adapter that plugs into the loom behind the stereo. There's one in my 6n2, and it works rather well.

Yeah that sounds more affordable than a new head unit which although ideal I just can't afford a nice looking one. 

Do you know what the adapters are called? There seems to be a few different plugs on eBay from £6-£70!

That's assuming your head unit has the third plug for the changer.

 

Don't get this sort, they're for the later cars with the socket in the arm rest for an ipod. 

 

 

 

If it is the base model, the chances are the radio will also be the basic model that doesn't have the CD function :(

It's an rcd200 which I believe was also on the t5 van. You'd assume that such a long haul vehicle at the time might have had a cd changer port but it'd not necessarily true.
