Alex Grant's Pearl Grey Mk3 G40

O/P updated 11/06/13

I've had the car since March 2000 - back then it looked like this:

But it's best known for sitting on these 15in wheels and looking similar to this for years:

I've started getting performance-obsessed recently though, here I am enjoying a certain toll road in Germany smile.gif

It's since had Gaz coilovers, a Quaife LSD, Helix clutch, Mocal oil cooler and Stack gauges fitted. Check out my 'serious motoring journalist' face biggrin.gif

It was refreshed in 2011, new wheels in 2012, and it now sits like this:null-25.jpg

You might also notice it now has the correct plates for the age of car. Details...

  • Well, I think I've reached the point where it's done. Easy to drive, fast, fairly comfortable. It works well, and I'm tempted to leave it as it is. This position has taken me 15 years and four month

  • Took it to C&M last night for the StrassenKultur evening and… well this was awesome.

  • Soooooo... new stuff. Bought these, haven't got around to fitting them yet. Or, do I go back to the half-tinted and clear lenses? Not sure. I've also discovered the answer to a question I didn't w

Cheers Karl, it's been on my mind for ages, but I was waiting for my wheels to arrive so I could take new pics. Ah well!

Instantly loved this car from the first time I saw it and its only got better and better, cars a credit it to you!

Perfect! Will look very nice on new wheels and a 60/40 drop?

Looks awesome as always Alex, hope to see it up at Swansea some time in the future!

Perfect totally sums this car up.Nice work mate

Have you gone back to the 15s now Alex?

I remember parking my old G next to this at Inters a few years back in the Show and Shine. Back when it was in it's GT guise.

Still looks great today! :)

Cheers, yeah the 15s are staying. Look nice, and I don't have to worry about scrubbage, peeling lacquer etc.

I'm not adventurous enough to go for lots of dish, I still need this to be a very practical mode of transport. With the 15s, there's enough arch clearance to carry an engine in the boot. Or 3 passengers. Plus there's a far wider, and more readily available selection of tyres available.

So I'm happy as I am (now).

Cool! Looks great as it is dude!

I completely agree!! I wanted a very similar look for mine, but i feel my wheels are a bit too fat!!!

Very nice street sleeper, looks ace!

car looks stunning! great example 8-)

I'm glad it still meets with people's approval, I'm hoping if I keep the 15s long enough they'll look old school  think I've got a long wait ahead of me!

Should be sporting some extras for next year's show season, but this year I'm gonna be missing out which is a shame. :(

Cheers for the compliments. :D

It's the shiznit fo' real son!

Thought it was about time I put some recent pics in here... so show pics from the Welsh Motor Show last Saturday and a couple of recent snaps have made their way in.

Not much in the way of changes, but new pics are always good (well, the back end one's not great tbh, but that's what happens when you take a quick snap).

Top marks if you can spot what's changed since the last ones went up!

an older one sneeking in there, one of my favorite shots of your car mate!

i remeber when i first went on e1k like 3-4yrs ago and saw it, that was me polo hooked!

keep going at it! oh and theres a 106GTi on ebay with your wheels on ;) saw it at cheltenham cruise and they look rubbish on any car apart from yours lol

I've seen them on a Scirocco (musicman off No Rice), plus local Orion (a red one) years ago, which looked pish, and an otherwise bog standard green/silver Focus. And a really tatty set on a Golf. Oh, and a set of 15s on an '80s Civic at the Wales Motor Show missing two centre caps. The Scirocco and Civic were the only ones which wore them well.

Odd wheels, pretty ugly tbh but they do look good when they work.

I'm currently missing a centre cap, I still have it, but it doesn't stay on while I'm moving. Can't get a direct replacement, and I've never liked the domed caps, so I'm trying to find myself some flat VW ones instead.

Thats a very nice car mate :finger:

You car always looks so tidy. Nice and understated.

I wish I'd taken as much time on my engine conversion as I did on yours!

Yeah people are always surprised when I tell them it's not a factory G40 because the engine bay's so neat, much credit due to you for that job Andy!

Since the pics were taken I've cleaned the oil off the head (rocker gasket was leaking) but I still need to tidy up the boost gauge installation and fit the catch tank.

Hopefully by next summer I'll have a PSD exhaust system on there too. :)

OMG!!!

That purple clio in the first pic belongs to my mate, Jamie

Suprised to see it next to a pretty polo mind!

(Just shocked that's all lol)

I love this car - one day... one day...:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

He spotted that too! He's a member on South Wales Cruise, which one of my mates helped set up. Those pics were taken on the SWC stand at the Wales Motor Show in August so they're on the forum there.
