So... I've been missing the car this weekend as I've not been doing much and the weather's been nice. Perfect weekend to go for a drive, but no G40 to go in. Ho hum.

Anyway, I'm thinking about wheels.

Not changing them, so much as altering them.

They've had a rebuild and refurb recently which is great, as it meant I could stick them on the car last year without feeling grumpy about kerb marks and so on against fresh paint. However, I don't really like the black centres, and I'm not so keen on the silver lips either, even though they've been done pretty well.

So the lips are getting either polished or chromed after UD. Question is what do you lot think about centre colours?

Silver?

Silver/gold?

Gold gold?

Grey?

Or am I wasting my time and should just get something else?

Just wondering what you think, that's all...

they are only 14x6 aren't they? not a fan of these myself but if you were to keep them do them with body coloured faces with polished lips, need spacing aswell really, but i get the impression you arent keen on "stance" though a set of gloss black bbs rz's would look good and be a good compromise i think

14x6.5 - which was part of the attraction. And only 5.1kg per corner.

Stance I don't mind as long as the car is usable. I can't stand scrubbing because even if I went to every show of the summer I've still got nightmare noises to live with the rest of the time.

I'm getting on for 30 now, fashion has kinda passed me by haha!

EDIT - but to add, I would quite like to space the rears out a bit. I just don't want to re-introduce understeer back into the equation. Widening the rear track is a good way to do this!

Personally I have never particularly liked them on your car but, they would look pretty cool with gold centers, polished lips and bolts.

If only you got those 14'' BBS RS' that were for sale!!

Staggeringly high money though, BBS rims. Always my problem, lack of said money!

I think a lot of people don't like the Watanabes, but I think they're pretty cool wheels and the colour scheme really isn't doing them any favours. :/

PLEASE do them silver/gold or gold, look amazing against the grey.

I do agree, they arent the best looking of wheels for a polo. However... for the purpose, they are bang on. Perfect size for a MK3 IMO and light as a feather.... what more could you want?

They definitely need to be a lighter colour. The black makes them look like Ripspeed specials.

That said a refurb is gonna leave me without a bloody car. Temptation here being to sack them off, swap them for another set and flog them without rubber.

Any takers if I do that? Haha!

Two piece. I'd be after, um, £250 or so I reckon. Freshly refurbed with spigot rings to suit (they were a bastard to find)

They're the only wheels I own at the moment though. Sold everything else over the years.

Could do it the long way and do one at a time, running the spare lol.

You always get other cars to drive though, do it when you have one for the weekend? Do a refurb in 2 days i reckon...

Dont need to remove the tyres which makes things a gazillion times easier.

Ah yeah it's not a case of needing the car to get around- it's off the road at the mo - it's just coming around to the summer which is when I want it on the road. I'm a bit worried about sending them off and not getting them back for a month.

Unless I pick up a set of cheap steels and bung the tyres on those for now.

Easy enough to paint them yourself surely?

Place that does refurbs in brum, can do it in a day...

Drop them off early morning, pick them up later on. Not a crappy place either, its quite decent, cant for the life of me remember the name, they have a few places dotted over the country IIRC

Trouble here is I'm after chrome or polished lips and I've got split rims.

I could probably get the centres painted at Perkins, then ship the rims off to be polished elsewhere.

But split rims are interference fit aren't they? So I'd have to take the tyres off, unbolt everything, then heat up the rim to pop the centres out.

Either way, they ain't gonna be done in a day...

Yep that's how these split too. I thought you had to take to them with a blowtorch or something?

Shouldn't do, as i doubt they would be sealed.

You only seal splits if its holding air, if not they should just bolt together.

Only reason you heat them up is to soften the sealant.

Silver Centres and the rears spaced (stub axle would be best, Club gti member makes them and DKnight iirc) and i think they will look so much better. Never liked the dark centres and i don't think you can beat silver on a mk3.
