Featured Replies

Welcome to my build thread, I have started with a standard 1.0 4 speed thats being converted into rwd with a complete engine and gearbox swap. Info on what engine and gearbox im using wont be revealed until its completed. I will update as i go along with a lot of parts being made up from scratch and photos of lots of the build parts.

Yeah sure, the engine is a 1600, gear box is out the same car but may be a possibilty of straight cut gears. Engine I have bought has been worked on before for racing but will be adding steel rods, lightened flywheel, a2 racecam, replacing pistons with steel pistons, bottom end may be replaced in due course with a abarth bottom end which was in a lada. Rear axle is undecided have multiple choices and the same with the diff. All fabrication and welding will be done by girlfriends dad or uncle and me and whole car will have a new race suspension, same wheels for shows, bbs rds for track days and interior will be brand new with custom cage, sparco leather seats, harnesses and all the trimmings! Build currently has only begun and I am collecting all parts needed to start the build. Will be a long road ahead of us but will be worth it in the end! Will also have an instagram thread dedicated to my build! Its polo_build!

Yes, have the rear axle and half shafts bought, engine is  bought but gearbox is the secured but not yet bought. Engine needs a few bits to get it running which are on next month's list. Until I get these bits the build is on hold. Once it's away into garage it will be stripped to bare shell and the metal work and fabrication will start. So hoping in all 2 years will finish the car completely but hopefully should see it on the road and nearly compete by show season next year. Will upload pictures and updates when I can. Most of it at the minute is just collecting the parts I need. Sorry about slow updates as well everyone. But yes it is happening and it will be possible.

Taking shape, whats your fuel tank choice, And audi saddlebag or internal race tank?

Original tank is the hope atm, planning to run it from the boot along with the external oil tank as the engine is dry sump and I want to keep it that way. Hopefully it works but that will be my famous last words lol. Hopefully end up with both tanks hidden in boot and have use of the original fill up point instead of needing to go into boot but that's all easier said than done.

Hope it comes together, ambitious build and we'd all like to see it done

Really hope this happens after seeing you asking for an axle width on Facebook the other day

Is it going to be front engine & RWD? I'd imagine standard tank + propshaft would be an issue.

Well it's going to be all bits from the same sonar car so yes but the engine will need to be turned compared to standard one but we have already ran into a few issues drawing up the plans for it but trying our best to fix them as we go along. Fuel tank will be one of the last things at the minute as I have no many bits still to buy but diff and casing came today so getting further every month. It's going to be a long build but by the time its finished it will be worth it and I'm determined to make it work.

Back of my mind is the thought if using a beetle rear subframe suspension setup with a watercooled engine

Or is it a boxer upfront?

There are some decent mechanical and part minds on here, you should lay your plan out so people can help you along

No it's an engine I don't think has been done before but yeah I might actually do that in the next few weeks!

Lexus is200?

Really a saloon would be perfect for the rwd conversion as you have alot more space at the back to work with

No it's a tuned racing engine out of something old, wait 2 years until it's built and you'll see lol yeah I did think about that but the coupe was my first car and couldn't sell it despite 2 attempts because it was breaking my heart to do so decided a rebuild was what was needed. Saloons are hard found in NI as well but bits are slowly coming together. Arranging a bulk order from England for parts so shouldnt be long until the cars starting to look like it's being transformed.

Its a Fiat Twink I reckon.

  • 5 years later...

Is this still ongoing buddy? I think it’s a mx5 by the looks of the rear axle and diff
