Led upgrade or not?

Featured Replies

Hi all. Hope you are well. I have a question about potentially replacing stock lamps on a mk2 with led's. I already have uprated wiring loom on my headlights. If i wanted to switch some of the other stock lights to led's, would i need to replace the wires that they are connected with, the relays or both? Just found some led number plate lights and interior lights. All come with a certain amount of cable attached to the units, just wondered how much extra work it would be to fit them.

Sorry if these seems like a dumb question to some people, feel free to point it out if it is, but if i don't ask, i don't find out.

Thanks for stopping by and for any guidance you can give. Take it easy.

LED's consume much less power than standard wire filament bulbs, so you don't need to upgrade any wiring or fit relays, however if you replace any of the mandatory exterior lights with LED's in theory it should be an MOT fail !! in practice they seem to turn a blind eye to them, interior lights you can fit whatever you want

That's good to know actually. Thanks. Was literally just looking at courtesy light and rear number plate lights. Had issues with rear number plate lights last couple of years. Had to replace 3 in two years!

Can anyone advise on dash lights? I've seen some led bulbs to replace stock ones, but there is a dimmer switch on mk2. Would switching to led bulbs cause any issues there?

Thanks again.

I fitted an interior light LED.. it does seem to run cooler than the tungsten bulb...but boy o boy is it bright!

I is a festoon type copy in my 9N3..... even now when i stop in the dark and put the light on it still surprises me!

I've replaced the interior light, tail lights, side lights, side repeaters and number plate lights with LEDs and been really happy.  Some LEDs are better than others though, so be careful what you buy.
