Hi all. Rocking a 1983 breadvan, had an issue with the handbrake on Sunday. Parked  on a slope, car rolled a little so pulled handbrake a little more and it snapped. Theory is, when a previous owner replaced the fuel tank, the bolt that holds the pulley that the cable attaches to, (top fig in picture,) must have got in the way or damaged somehow. The part is no longer in production. Has anyone got a useable one in a garage or had to make one up? Or is anyone able to measure one they have on their polo and maybe send a pic so i can get something made up? Big ask i know with it being Xmas and cold out but any help at all would be amazing. Just had another call from the garage. Seems as though the fuel tank fitted by previous owner may be wrong one. Because of that, the handbrake cable has been fed around fuel tank with diy outer which has perished. So if the welded mount hadn't gone, cable probly would have. Is it going to be in my best interest to replace the fuel tank with the correct one? Mechanic has said he can get two pulleys to mount the new cable so it doesn't rest on the fuel tank, if i can't get hold of a stock one.

Spacker alert! Just read the original post. Isn't the top set up i have in the diagrams, it's the bottom set up. Lookin for part number 9 in the picture. 

Think there are 2 types of tank, carb and injection

 

Think injection has an aditional breather on the top.

 

You could switch your hand brake setup to the mk2f but that would require some.holes being drilled in the beam for the cable holder brackets to mount

^ wasnt there an early tank too

 

ive seen folk welding in the later handbrake mechs

Can't fit pulley 9 with a 42litre tank, only with 36litre tank.

 

 

Guessing the larger tank has been fitted here. Mechanic is currently looking to fit two pulleys. One in place of the original pulley and the other to help the cable clear the fuel tank. As there are no leaks currently from the tank, mechanic has recommended leaving it for now.

Could the wrong tank being fitted also be why my fuel gauge never goes up past the half way mark too? Or is that just down to not being fitted correctly?
