Probably a plastic clip that holds the metal rod

Youll need to take the door card off to have a look

Snow and ice currently but it opened for the drive home n when got back wouldnt work

Hmmmm best thing to do it is take the door card off, see if there's anything loose or broken and have a can of WD-40 to hand make sure everythings nice and freely moving.

Probably just the door latch that's frozen, I've had the same on the caddy. Pour some warm water down the outside of the door at the back of the handle.
