Wheel Bearing renewal front 6n2

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

I've come up against a bit of a problem and maybe i'm just being a bit dumb but i need your help.

I was experiencing a whiny squeaky type noise coming from the front nearside and upon inspection i found out that the noise was coming from the front nearside wheel bearing ,anyhow seeing as today was bright and dry i gave it a go.

Acquired the correct wheel bearing from motor factors and took the hub of no problem ,and an engineer bloke i know pressed me the old bearing out and pressed the new one back in so all well up to now .

Anyway i can't seem to get the damn thing fitting back in correctly,so i have posted some  pics in the hope someone can guide me who has done it before,it shouldn't be that harder job really should it maybe it's just me and cars.

Right looking at the picks can you confirm that this sleeve on the hub is in the right place as the hub wont go back far enough on the splines to refit the nut up ,it's like it shouldn't be there,i was thinking that the bloke who pressed the bearing back has missed something off or something anyway he says he hasn't..So i'm open to suggestions please.

Please see pictures.

  • The "sleeve" on the hub is part of the old bearing and needs to be removed then the hub needs to be pressed into the carrier/bearing

  • No that is part of the old bearing it needs to be removed and put in the bin, then you will need your friendly garage to press the hub into the new bearing

  • Angle grinder but not all the way through then a cold chisel to crack it, then you should be able to remove it, or if you have oxyacetylene heat the sleeve up and you might be able to just lever it of

Thanks for reply Nige, yep thought as much so what you are saying the sleeve shouldn't be there, thing is i tried to install the hub onto the splines with the new bearing in place not realising that the sleeve should not be on there and it was hid with a piece of wood so it will be jammed into where it sits now.???Should that sleeve fit in the back of the bearing with possibly another bearing race fitted into the rear part.

Ok got you ,any ideas how remove that sleeve :D.The bearing kit i purchased came with two circlips and as you can see in the photo the front has been fitted ? silly question does the other one fit into the rear of the bearing or is it a spare.

Right Nige thanks for your help on this ,think i've got an angle grinder lying about somewhere and a cold chisel come to that so will have a go tomorrow, thing is if i knacker it up it's bite the bullet and buy a new hub.

??/So the other circlip isn't needed at the back then.

For the benefit of the forum, here's an update.

Everything has been put back together,so here's a rundown of what i've done.

Because the bearing on the drivers side front was squealing the obvious thing to do was to renew the faulty bearing which is what i have done upon inspection the Hub also need to be replaced because of part of the old bearing stuck on the hub shaft.

Well i have a problem so i am in need of some help.

I  torqued the bearing up to 200 nm and basically the wheel is not spinning with the  car on axle stands and i got an assistant to put the car in  gear and see if it frees up at all, but it didn't so backed the drive shaft nut right back to about 100 nm and it just about spins but  there is to much play on the wheel but anything more and it's not spinning. The brakes are not binding so it's not that.

When the new hub was pressed into the hub carrier with the new bearing it was moving freely.

So the question it...??What is happening here..?Anybody else had similar problem.

all i can say is remove the brakes and see if helps...then the driveshaft , if its still stiff something has gone wrong , id get another bearing and hub and try again

Thanks for reply Steve, the brakes aren't  binding at all bud so i can rule that one out,?what could go wrong, the bearing was pressed into the hub carrier and the the new hub pressed into the bearing and it spun happily.

never heard of it myslef...can only think the bearing has failed somehow ?

did you support the bearing as you pushed the hub/drive flange in
