6n2 door loom broken

Just got a 6n2 and the driver side electrics dont work. Ive looked at the wiring between the driver side door and the body if the car to find a broken brown wire thats previously been repaired and failed... 


Whats the best way to properly repair this? 


Also when i touch the wires the electric mirrors and locks work, passenger window also works but drivers window still wont work. I dunno how to fond out if its the switch or the motor.


The motor makes a click noise when i push the button in one direction but does nothing

The 'standard' automotive cables of 14/0.30 (14 strands, each strand being 0.30mm dia) which would carry 8.75 Amps, are not really flexible enough for the constantly bending door application. It will work, but is likely to break mechanically in a short time. This is due to the fact that copper 'work hardens', meaning the more that you bend it, the harder it becomes, and the harder it is, the more likely it is to break.

There is available 24/0.20 cable which will carry 6 Amps or 32/0.20 (10 Amps) These cables are primarily intended for speaker applications, but should prove longer lasting for areas subjected to constant bending.

The joint between the old and new cables is best soldered, but don't use more solder than is required to form a good joint, or it will tend to flow into the cable, making it virtually solid!

Make the new wire as long as possible (rather than joining a short length in the middle of the overall length), that way it will have maximum flexibility.

Before joining the cables, slip two short lengths of heat shrink sleeving over it - each long enough to cover the joint, plus a small amount to grip the cable insulation.Shrink it with a hot air gun when the job is finished.

If you are not used to soldering, you will need a small (preferably electric) soldering iron and some 'multicore' solder. Suggest you practice on some spare cable by applying the soldering iron to the CLEAN (don't touch it) bare cable. When the cable is hot enough and you apply the solder to it, you should see the solder 'run' - if it forms a bead, the cable isn't hot enough - the solder must run, or you will end up with what is called a 'dry joint', meaning that it isn't really joined at all. If the insulation starts to melt, it is far too hot.

If you are using a new soldering iron or one whose tip is not coated with solder, you will need to 'tin' the tip. Heat up the iron, wipe the tip (preferably on a damp 'Spontex' sponge) and apply a little solder. It is good practice to wipe the tip in that way each time that the iron is hot and ready fro use.

Keep the hot iron away from upholstery.


From what you say, it sounds as if the motor is at fault, but it could also be down to mechanical problems with the mechanism - You will have to remove the door card to check that.
