Yesterday, I washed the engine and the engine bay, went for a short drive to dry it out with no problems. Today, the idle is erratic between 700 and 1000 rpm. More importantly it has the same effect as a sticking throttle cable, in as much as the revs are taking 2 or 3 seconds to die from, say 3000 revs. Have I got some water in somewhere?

Most likely, how did you wash it? 

 

Wd40 dispurses water so use that on the tps, might be worth taking the tb off and laying it upside down after for the wd and water to leave, spray the loom connoector too and leave to dry

 

Spray the ignition coil and jnside the dizzy too to make sure 

Washed with Muc off bike cleaner, then rinsed with watering can with rose attached. Today I disconnected all terminals and checked for dry, sprayed some wd and problem cured.

Oh dear. The problem has returned today.

Spray up the inside of the dizzy, check that the alt belt is tight and so are the bolts, 17mm top 13mm bottom

did you disconnect your battery before washing it?

If not, try to make the basic settings on your throttle with VCDS

It's an '08 Match 60. 1.2 petrol.

Belt is ok and bolts are tight.

No I didn't disconnect the battery. What is VCDS?

VCDS is a copy of the VW dealers diagnostic system that will tell you if there are any fault codes stored and allow you to carry out the basic settings on the throttle body, it runs on a laptop
