Here’s one for you- mirror adjustment

Featured Replies

Here’s a weird one for you.

Ive not had to adjust my wing mirrors for a while, but just used the adjuster to check if I was in the parking bay I was taking a stab at. Switched the knob to right mirror and moved it. Thought ‘that’s odd, I can hear movement the other side’.

Turns out if I switch the knob to the left mirror, it adjusts just the left mirror. If I switch it to the right, it adjusts both mirrors... obviously the workaround is adjust both with the right then get the left one correct with the left adjustment.

A pain in the backside though, and ideally I’d like them both working as they should. Any ideas on this?

Last time i adjusted them before this I’m certain they both worked independently. Also both seem to be a little lazy when adjusting now, not as smooth as before. At 120 a side on ECP id ideally like to avoid buying new mirrors!

Its a 2002 9N polo, AWY engine code. Any advice gratefully appreciated as ever. Cheers!

As BOTH sides appear to be slow in reacting to adjustment, it is unlikely that the fault is with the mirror units, but is more likely to be a problem with the selector or adjuster control - there could also be some crud on any connection between the fuse holder and the control.

Another possibility (and that might account for both mirrors moving together) is that an earth fault is virtually putting both mirrors in series - accounting for both of them moving, AND the slow speed.

That control of the mirrors is a quirk mainly on UK models, I think those sold in the Republic of Ireland do individual control, so you can get a mirror control switch that will do them independently but they are rarer than hens teeth, the other option is to dismantle the switch and cut the PCB tracks
