Hi all, Last Friday I changed the dreaded selector shaft seal (with much difficulty) and refilled the box with fresh oil. 

Problem is it’s still leaking a lot (visibly and regularly dripping/trickling out from the inside of the seal.)

Changed the seal again more carefully and it seems to be leaking even more, don’t want to drive it in this state.

 

Theres a small scratch on the end of the shaft but as far as I know this part never comes into contact with the seal so shouldn’t be causing the problem? I can stop the flow if I hold the seal in with a small screwdriver.

 

ANY tips or info on whether it’s worth trying again or if I’m gonna need to get a new gearbox would be appreciated.

anyone thought of using fast gasket or some kind of thick grease to block the leak?

Sorry to here that your having trouble, I recently did mine and I had to drill it to get it off. I recommend a reasonably good brand of seal, when you take it off use some very fine polishing sandpaper on the shaft make sure it's completely clean and don't let any grit get into the input, then when putting the new seal on put put just a smear of instant gasket around the seal, push on and maybe give just a light tape around the edges. Be careful not to knock or hit the shaft.

Cheers mate I’ll give that a go when GSF opens tomorrow, did you push your seal right back in to the recess or just flush?

It's meant to sit flush, if you can mate take a picture of what's yours looks like.

Can’t get under the car right now as it’s pouring with rain but my seal is maybe pushed  5mm in from the lip of the gearbox it fits into.

I’ve been trying to hammer it in as far as it’ll go feel like a right idiot now

That’s the one I’ve been using! Forgive me for sounding daft but what exactly is the “stop”? 

FIXED!! Thanks guys, used a thin line of instant gasket round the seal (much better GSF seal as opposed to the eBay seals I’d been using) and tapped it in flush with the side of an adjustable spanner and a pin hammer. 

Have also invested in a tube of that Wynn’s gearbox stop leak/treatment stuff for better or worse.

 

Relieved would be be an understatement, thought I was going to lose the box 😎
