took engine out and thought while it's out change a few things at same time.

 

power steering hoses , i think theres two of them.

they both look abit rusty in some places.

 

anyway of cleaning them down, take rust off and spray some paint on them?

new ones cost 70-80 pounds each

My advice would be to make hay while the sun shines - once the engine is back in, those pipe (I think you intended to say pipes rather than hoses?) are a pig to do anything with.

I have painted them with Hammerite which is OK, but if they rust later they will need changing.

 

I didn't realise that they were so expensive. A suggestion that might be worth following up, is to seek out a local hydraulics specialist - people who carry out industrial work and work for contractors plant, they may well make you up a pair of pipes to the pattern of the old ones for a fraction of the cost, but make sure that they are prepared to do so before you take the pipes off, as removing them could make them worse.

 

It isn't possible to get the pipes out when the engine is in place without bending them, so they would then be of little use as a pattern.

Probably a good reason they are expensive: high pressure lines with good end fittings.

Be sure they are power steering not aircon before you clean 'em up. Check there no T junction taps with plastic caps covering a ball valve. Aircon coolant gas can cause frostbite.

Power steering fluid loss is usually not disastrous until the power steering pump fails. Personally I wouldn't paint them in case that hides a leak.

yep they are rusted too bad. 20 year old car. what would you expect.

ive taken them off, thier pretty big. can't see a local hydrualic hose fitting company doing them much cheaper.

i've both the high pressure and return pas lines but i forgot to take a photo of the order the old ones were installed .

 

the high pressure ones is the really long pipe with the return the shorter one.

there was no rubber seals , just a washer on either side.
