Please let me know if this is posted in the wrong place

Just wondering if anybody knows how to remove or replace the large circular air intake on the standard engine bay of my polo, looking to change to a cold air intake but unsure how to do so. I included a photo to show the circular air intake system.

Unclips cover, remove cover, 3 bolts around the centre, lift off entire assembly disconnecting the breather pipe. 

 

To remove the studs, get 2 nuts, tighten both against each other, "undo" the bottom nut and the stud should turn, it is a slow process as the stud creates a vacuum behind it, don't rush or it will snap. 

 

Find a MK3 golf SPI elbow, longer bolts, block any open vacuum pipes, reconnect breather and jobs done. 

The black pipe is feeding cold (ambient) air from behind the headlight.
The silver pipe is feeding warmed air from above the exhaust manifold which is about 200 degrees.

There is a vacuum operated flap in the black pipe which is pulled close over the silver pipe when a thermo-valve in the dustbin lid filter housing has warmed up enough.

A VW engineer carefully designed the system for year round operation in cold damp hot humid dry or icy weather.

Are you sure it is 1.3. There's an idle control valve on the bulkhead, which I thought were 1litre specific.

That's the charcoal filter valve, technically that should be removed along with all associated pipe work and charcoal canister before being hurled into the nearest rubbish bin, but let's not over complicate things. 😂

Yes, you are right, thinking carb not injection/SPI/MPi  But is that on an AAK 1liter -  not a 3F or NZ which have none dustbin lid filters - if these pictures are to be believed.

Have a golf elbow, has the oil breather on the bottom too which will be an easy fit. Also have a 1.4 injector plate with the bolts to add the elbow

Probably a spare gt airbox you can join to the elbow 

If you get carburettor icing come winter, remember what dvderlm has said about that highly paid VW engineer.

 

To anyone putting those studs and nuts back inside the original air cleaner, as they are on the INSIDE of the air cleaner element and could be 'swallowed' by the engine if they become loose, I would advise a dab of 'thread-lock' on the studs to carb body, and on the studs before fitting the nuts.

i guess you dont want to hear it , but keep your money in your pocket ...you wont turn it into a racing car by fitting an elbow

True, compared with a modded mpi a modded spi it wont compete bit it did make for sharper throttle responce and a bigger injector will help run a more aggressive cam

 

I ran it like this before going mpi

 

If you dont have mechanical experience or confidence to take on a mpi conversion then this can help male the car more fun to drive 

 

If i was sticking spi i would:

• Chipped ecu

• bigger injecor + golf / gt induction

• gt or possibly  264 cam 

• 421 manifold

• gt gearbox 

 

Will cost money to do, less than you think if you wait and hunt the items at a good price

roar it up the road with no air filter...that the very best performace you would get removing all restrictions, it might sound faster thats all
