Hello,

 

I'm own a 1998 WV Polo Classic (6KV2) with an 1.6L 8-valve 75HP gasoline engine (AEE).

Whenever I try to start the car in the morning, I get the following situation: Engine starts, idles correctly, but if I touch the gas pedal (even in neutral) it will choke and nearly stall. Afterwards it works just fine (even if I stop the engine and start again it's ok). The problem only seems to come back if I leave the car turned of for at least half a day (or overnight). It also seems to be a bit more pronounced in cold weather.

 

Any idea what could be the cause of this?

if i had to guess id say a temp sender

 

you can plug it into a cheap scanner and see whats going on

Truth be told these issues started nearly a year ago just around the time I replaced the temperature sensor (the old one was faulty). I've also replaced the entire thermostat housing (including thermostat and temp sensor) all brand new.

Should I have done anything to the ECU after this replacement?

dont know about telling the ecu...i have an older polo

 

all i can say is buy a scanner tool /lead , you can get free laptop software if you have a cable and then check what the ecu is seeing , ive known non genuine sensors to be bad from the box

I think that you may have answered your own question when you say that you replaced a faulty temperature sensor.

As steveo says, non genuine sensors are notorious for either not working at all, not lasting very long or being intermittent in operation.
