16v 1.4 Alloy block Engines - Is It An Urban Myth That You Can Not Be Rebuilt?

Featured Replies

To save weight, I was looking at building up an engine around an alloy block, but read a few times the block distorts if the crank mains get removed.

Sounds suspect to me, I hope someone can confirm if its true or BS to cover up a bad rebuild?

This can happen even with cast iron blocks but when the mains bolts are torqued up back to what they should be, then the block will come back "true" to its original state when it was manufactured . If you are concerned that your block will not be good, have it line bored to get it as perfect as possible. If reassembled with the crank it and it turns freely then there is a good chance it will not be a problem. The same applies when you have a short block assembled and it all turns freely then it's likely to be OK especially if the engine will be stock.

This the warning in the Autodata details for the AUA/AUB 1.4 16v fitted in the 6N2 & 9N1 also for the BBY/BBZ in the 9N1

Why would you design something like that?

Throw away society, plus VW can make more money by selling you a new engine, the 1.25 & 1.4 16v in the Ford fiesta is the same.

Yeah but surely intentionaly making something non servicable in that way is against the customers best interest

You should learn about capitalism...

Does n't #dieselgate show they valued profit over the planet's inhabitants, a small number of whom may have been future customers or employees?

Let's maximize value for shareholders by growing the difficult American market.

It was an intentional comment. Buisness is about making profit but there should never be a price on life

The ford pinto in the 70s is probably one of the most famous cases of corporate manslauter

Apparently toyota did have an accelerator fault and not user error

Thanks very much for all the replies guys, I have been away all week & unable to reply.

Yes - Nige's Autodata is what I had read.

After my post I also stumbled across this really detailed you-tube pretty much confiming that they can be rebuilt:

This is for Lupo Gti - due to the unique bolt pattern of the 6 speed box, I am looking at using a BKY block form a manual car, it looks like it has all the same bolt location except one marked below and also the starter is on the front of the block:

Engine block Seat Skoda VW Cordoba 6L Ibiza Fabia Polo 1,4 16V BKY EN301295

The BKY has the usual 76.5mm bore is there any chance VW were lazy and they have the same crank journal sizes as AVY? to make it 1.6?

And has anyone tuned an alloy block? -wondering what power these blocks can take before they start ripping head studs out...

BKY & AVY share the same bearings - at least from ebay listings.

Need to start comparing oil and water ways.

I would double check on any part numbers on here https://volkswagen.7zap.com/en/rdw/polo+derby+vento-ind/po/2002-240/1/  before believing any eBay listings 🙂

That info from the Autodata is also in the dealers manual 😕

Yes- agreed - cant trust ebay, thanks for the link

Found this link http://www.vehiclepartsdatabase.com/vehicles/allprivateroadvehicles/volkswagen/polo/1416v/bby/19450/crankshaftmainbearings/glyco/h13255std

Apparently the BKY bearings are in a 2007 Lotus Elise and my Lupo AVY

But that list shows 1.6 litre engines as well, every one is cast iron block  - think the alloy block crank case is too small for the throw of the crank

Lots of manufacturers (not just car manufacturers either) make their money on parts rather than the main product.

Ever priced up main dealer parts from some of the cheaper manufacturers like Vauxhall or Ford? That is where they make their money after you've saved £10k buying an Insignia over a BMW 3 series.

Why do you think service kits and replacement parts are so readily available these days too? For example, go onto the Makita website. You can quickly and easily find parts for any of their current tools. There is no money to be made in making things last a lifetime, but there is money to be made in making things last just long enough so you think they are good, so you go back to them for either replacement parts or the latest model.

It will be the six million dollar bionic engine

"Gentlemen, we can rebuild him. We have the technology. We have the capability to make the world's first bionic man. Steve Austin will be that man. Better than he was before. Better... stronger... faster."

Yeah but there are resonable limits, like apple slowing old phones down to get people to upgrade
