Hi all.

recently reversed my 6n over a log that I was using to chock the wheels on my sloped driveway, wedging it between my front wheel and the inside of the radiator. 

 

Took it for a drive and noticed a growling noise that appears around 30mph and keeps up all the way to 90 , and keeps growling even in neutral or with the clutch in. I don’t know whether this is related to the log incident as I hadn’t driven the car for a while before, but it’s really annoying and now seems to pull to the left a bit when driving. 

 

I have checked for play in the front wheels, there is none, there’s a tiny bit on the back but the back wheels also spin way more freely than the fronts, don’t know if this normal? 

 

The noise doesn’t seem to differ either way I steer the car, I’ve read about tires making noises like this but I don’t see them being this loud. 

 

Any insight would be much appreciated!

Sounds like a wheel bearing.

 

Jack it up 1 wheel at a time (on flat ground with chock for front/handbrake for rear on ground) and spin each wheel. If one rumbles much more than others there's the cause.

Might need a "listening stick" (eg screwdriver held to the hubnut) to hear the grinding.

 

As to rears spinning more easily, drum brake shoes can back away further than pads from discs - especially if there is any bearing play (rock wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock, then at 3 and 9o'clock positions. It should barely budge) 

(or shoes could be very worn).

I don't like guessing ...........But - could the log have bent any tin-work that is now rubbing on (say) the crankshaft pulley or do you only have the noise when the car is in motion - so maybe rubbing on the driveshaft?

haha just got back from uni and was a bit excited to be back behind the wheel. I tried turning the wheels and feeling the struts but your listening stick idea sounds more foolproof, is there a noticeable difference in sound between say brakes dragging and the wheel bearings?

Is there any chance the log could've broken a belt in the tire or something?

That's something i thought of but didn't really know where to look, i will report back

In my experience, brake rub is constant. Worn bearing makes a rough grind/graunch once or twice per revolution.

in motion it can become a wub,wub noise once the frequency enters human hearing range and exceeds engine noise.

 

Doubt you can destroy a tyre at low speed. Only if your tyres were under-inflated when you drove over the log. Check the inner tyre walls for bulges?

Have just tried a screwdriver against the struts and my ear whilst turning the wheels. It’s hard to say but I think the left makes more of a “whooshing” noise than the right which rises in volume at a certain point of rotation. 

It also looks like the hub and nut have been very hot, they’ve an almost reddish white tinge to them unlike rust and the spigot ring on the alloy is melted in place 😬

 

Might have to make a trip to the garage unless any kind Soul on here knows a way to replace bearings without a press?

So it’s been to my trusted local vag specialist.

They don’t think any of the wheel bearings are out however the camber on my passenger front wheel is way out, presumably from hitting that log. 

They reckon it’s that and that the sound changes over different road services.

All in all a much cheaper option lol
