Hi there I have a 13 year old 2005 VW Polo MK4 1.4 diesel 3 door. Just recently both front electric windows have stopped working intermittently. There is no clicking sound from either of the motors so that means there is no power being supplied to them and the windows are definitely not stuck because when they work they move with ease. There are no other electrical issues with the car, both electric mirrors work ant the central locking buttons on the driver door work with no problem and there are no issues with the wipers, dash lights, indicators, screen-wash pump. At first I thought it might be the 25 amp fuse but there is nothing wrong with it and just to prove it wasn't the fuse I replaced it and still nothing. One thing I can't wrap my head around is that both the window switches on the drivers door or the passenger door don't work yet the switches still light up when you turn the lights on which means the switches do have power to them. After seeing that the lights on the switches were working I tried the windows and still nothing. Would really appreciate it if someone knew more about this than I. Thanks for the help -Tom

First Welcome to the forum.

 

99% of problems like you have are down to broken wires in the flexy rubber tube between the door and the body

would a broken wire issue in the driver side door affect both the passenger and driver side windows? or vice versa

If the wires are broken the bare ends could be shorting to the wiring to the opposite side windows and that would stop the windows also there are three fuses for the window motors F38, 39 & 26 ( 25a, 25a & 7.5a)

Hi Tom, did you get to the bottom of this? I'm having the same issue with my 2007 3 door. Occasionally both windows and switches will start working as normal, but most of the time both sides are completely dead, no other electrical issues.  The motors, switches and fuses seem to be fine.

 

It seems to be in warm weather that they start working, so I assumed some moisture must be getting into a split somewhere. I thought I had thoroughly checked the wiring in the door flex but might need a better look. Any other suggestions appreciated - thanks!

Hi Pete, South Yorkshire area. Thanks, I’ve read your thread and will keep that in mind, very useful info. Does the motor module issue have the same symptoms? Occasionally the windows and controls on both sides will work faultlessly, usually in dry, warm weather. I was told it was likely to be the wiring in the door flex.

Yes, exactly those symptoms. If it were a wiring fault they'd probably never work.

I have a 2008 polo 1.2, both windows stopped working, check 3 fuses listed in some of your posts (2x25 &5amp), tried the door key lock and unlock and both windows go up and down when you turn the key. Looked at wires (visually only) in door shut and all look fine and good condition. Is this a window motor control unit fault? And could you repair it? Thanks

Hi @Pete1 , I am having the same issue here on a 07 polo, both front windows working intermittently. After the issue came they worked for 2-3 more times but completely stopped in the last 2 weeks.

One way to sort this problem is to replace both window motors. Either from your local scrapyard. Or buy new from a motor factors, or direct from Vw " make sure " that you replace the motors like for like. There are 3 different types of electric window motor made by Vw There are some resistors in the motor that have gone once these are replaced the old motors will work again. I'm looking for the article so I can offer a Vw window motor replacement service. I change your motors, and take your old motors in part exchange. I will then refurbish your old motor's then sell them onto the next person.
