............Car seems low on power. Feels more like an 8v than a 16v at the moment ............. Which sends a fair amount of oil up...

Have you looked at the big air filter.

Which one...the main air filter above TB?

Yes. Replaced the filter 2 mo ths ago and since done around 3-4k on it and its got thick slimy residue over at least a 3rd of it.

Nige. Ill go back over TB pipe need servo pipe.

I may need to invest in vcds..

Unless anyone near cardiff and can clear code for cheap/free?! 😜

How do i check the breather sydtem other than those pipes. The oil breather hose looks quite hard to access

If it's blowing that much oil vapour about, it might pay to get a compression test done.

If you remove the inlet manifold it will give you access to the air/oil seperator box https://volkswagen.7zap.com/en/rdw/polo+derby+vento-ind/po/2001-240/1/103-103005/#19  on the rear and remove that and wash it out also it will give you better access to the main breather pipe that comes from the seperator

Hmm just checked the hoses. My engine looks different to the one you sent pic of. Cant see barely any hoses. The ones i can see arent damaged.. the oil breather has oil halfway down it where the valve bit is. Also one of the hoses going from TB to near front driverside wing. With a sensor plug has very slight nicks on the bend

That previous picture was of my old AUD 1.4 8v it was just as an example of the sort of vacuum lines you should be looking for.

Do you mean the breather pipe is full of oil to half way down to the seperator block ?

The pipe going to the drivers wing area is the charcoal canister vacuum line you could temp block the pipe off at the throttle body end and see if that improves things

  • Author

Ill try block it. No its not full. But halfway down the pipe looks like a valve or sumin in the pipe. And it has oil residue on outside

  • Author

Ok. That pipe going to charcoal has good vacuum. Engine ran same with it blocked. Except had epc and eml light pop up. Plugged it back in. Error was still p0401

OK that sounds like the heater element (pipe 28a in that last link) they introduced to stop the pipe freezing up, if the oil is on the outside that sounds like it could be split, no chance it's just spilt oil from a top up ?

Yea that looks like mine. With the plug in middle. Yea it looks battered by the airbox. Cant be arsed to pull airbox off again but thr pipe is oily halfway down and ive attached pic of top. You can see condition. Is this likely to be causing my problems?....when i run it to atmosphere car feels abit better just effing stinks (obv)

Have you taken that EGR adapter off and checked it's clear all the way through ?

  • Author

Which adaptor? The flange under TB or the gold coloured pipe from egr to TB

  • Author

No i have not. Ill crack on with that now

Cheers

  • Author

Cleaned out the adaptor elbow bit with a bit of coathanger and carb cleaner drove 10miles. Light back 😞

Was the hole into the manifold nice and clear as well ?

  • Author

Yea. The egr is new. And every connecting pipe has been cleaned out. Not sparkling but no buildup on the sides and free flowing. .

My car didnt start earlier....which is unlike it.  I checked the hose id pulled off for charcoal thing and it started no problems. Maybe i didnt seat it?

No the hole into the exhaust manifold where that adapter bolts onto it

The area's I've highlighted in red

  • Author

Yea thats clear too. Sorry my bad explanation.

  • Author

Ill check that in the morning.

Someone mentioned having to plug there polo into vcds after a new egr for some resetting reason?? Is this right

Also while im pulling the Tb off. Is there any thing connected around that worth cleaning aswell?

If you disconnect the connector on the throttle body, you might need to do the re-alignment proceedure with VCDS, but if you leave it connected you don't, clean the inside of the throttle body above and below the butterfly with carb cleaner and an old toothbrush, but DO NOT try and force the butterfly to move as you will damage it.

I can't recall anything about having to reset the EGR after a new unit is fitted

  • Author

Ok...i may misunderstand but do i need to remove the throttle body tto access the egr flange. Or can i just remove the gold pipe and get at it that way.?

Id rather avoid any garage visits even though one is deffo looming

You could clean it without removing the throttle body, but for the sake of 4 bolts you could remove it and clean it better and while it's off, clean the throttle body below the butterfly, as I suspect with the amount of oil your breathing, the throttle body will be quite dirty

  • Author

Ok ive cleaned it out.....was actually pretty clean. Other than some oil around the tb it was cleaner inside! . I was so hopong itd be caked up 😞
