A couple of MOT's back I got a corrosion advisory for O/S beam mount near the fuel filler area. I Aquasteeled it up and it wasn't detected at the last MOT at a different garage (good sign, right?).

 

The whole arch is rotten now; the skins are separating and the GT arch trim fell off somewhere never to be seen again.

 

How bad does the beam mount have to get to fail an MOT and is it an expensive welding repair?

Structural welding is mostly labour cost. About 40% prep time, 60% weld and clean time.

Guessing  at £200. Depends how far the rot goes. Hiding it might have been a short term saving.

Get a few quotes.

Bodywork prep and spray and dry and polish can be much more - bodyshops  are used to charging insurance companies. 

 

You mean a bodyshop would be more expensive than somewhere else? Or you mean comparing the cost of a respray with a structural repair?

If i recall any rot within 6 inches of a mounting point is a fail

Respray more than structural … depending how bad the structural is of course.

Yes it's a GT minus one arch-trim

 

Is any filler usually used on a repair like this? Think I'd prefer just new metal with no filler even if it looks rougher

Get a few quotes, mobile mechanic, its worth saving. 

 

May be a small amount of filler to hide the seam after the repair
