Had a number of things go wrong / be changed on my bready's front end recently and naturally have a heightened sense of hearing and touch on drives since! One thing that triggered both was a 'click' felt through the wheel when turning. Was happening as the shaft was torqued in either direction. Worried it was something i'd done while working on the front suspension I've spent a few days trying to locate where the sound and sensation is coming from and no previous forum posts seemed to point me to anything useful. Until today!

 

Finding the exact point the click can be felt back and forth on the wheel I can see the universal joint at the end of the steering shaft in the cabin makes a visible slip/shift in time with the little click. Thankfully this is pathetically small (although amplified through the steering column) and much, much easier to live with than anything else it could have been! However, as usual, now I know of its existence its going to knaw at me how to fix it.

 

The UJ doesn't seem to be bolted together but pinned - the only bolt is a pinch at the end of the shaft to connect it to the rack. Has anyone tightened up one of these before? Is it probably just a case of a slap of grease? Should I really be all that bothered?

 

 

I have the same thing, a click when turning, especially noticable at low speeds when parking, manoeuvring etc

 

I did wonder if could be the steering rack itself, or where the steering arms attach to it. Tightening the clamps on the arms and steering column to UJ didn't help

 

 

I suspect this is just going to be one of those things one has to just get used to eh

Having had a more thorough fiddle it appears that the 'click' originates not from the steering UJ but from the rack istelf - the steering arms have a tiny amount of play in them at the rack end. I'm going to see if tightening the adjustment on the rack a smidge won't sort it, otherwise it may be time for a new rack.
