Hi all. 

I have what I think is a thrust bearing failure. I’ve studied how to replace (seems fairly straightforward) but I have never removed/installed a car gearbox before. 

I cant find a tutorial on YouTube to study. 

Any suggestions please?

What car is it?

Get a trolley jack.

Find a skateboard to lower the gearbox onto. You can wheel it out from under the car and back under again when you have changed the release bearing.

Bulky awkward shape that is hard to lift by hand.

I used an old roasting tin as a larger target. 

Get a ratchet strap or two to hold the gearbox when you lower and raise it, then you can get it level to make sliding back onto the splined crankshaft end simple.

 

Consider changing clutch friction disc while it is off if done more than 80,000 miles and pressure plate too if done mega miles.

Change gearbox oil while off the car. 

Selector shaft seal too if rod change not cable change.

 

Thanks. Some great advice there. Oil already changed. I’m buying a 3 in 1 kit from Borg and Beck so all new bits.

Also replace the sleeve on the gearbox input shaft, as they normally develop grooves in them and that can cause a "notchy" feel on the pedal if you don't replace it
