Just picked up this 1992 Polo here in the US.  As you can see it needs a thorough cleaning, the previous owner had it parked in his driveway for sometime before I acquired the car.  In its lifetime it was sent to a shop to have an AEB 1.8t swapped into it.  Im new to Polos but certainly not new to VW.  👍

The US never got the Polo.  However, this one has been floating around here since 2007ish.  I was fortunate enough to pick this one up only two miles down the road from my house.

Giving her a good cleaning this weekend.  Gotta bleed the coolant system and do an oil change.  Then I'll be able to take it out and have some fun!  I'm gonna be on the hunt for some interior bits very soon, any ideas where I should be looking? 

Looking to order new control arms (wish bones) for both sides of the car.  I haven't been able to track down any OEM pieces, ant input on the best aftermarket brand?  Or am I better off popping in new bushings into the old arms?

G40 wishbones should have a rose joint on the inboard end - they're not so easy to find new. If normal polo ones have been fitted, simply replacing the bushings with polyurethane items is the next best option. Easy to find too!   😎

Stopped by the garage after work and took a look.  They certainly have the rose joint on the inner portion.  A poly replacement for these should snug up the front end quite a bit.  Thanks for that bit of info 👍

Occasionally NOS ones pop up on German eBay, but they are usually £200+ each. Luckily they aren't sided so at least that makes it easier.

Really unless the car has done silly miles or has been hard used the rose joints should not have worn out. If they have, they can be pressed out and replaced, but where you'd find a replacement is another issue.

The most likely case is the rose joint is fine but the ball joint is knackered. In that case, as I said you could press out the rose joint and attempt to fit it to a new standard arm (which are still available). However a standard arm would need the inner hole bored out before it can accept the rose joint. 

Appreciate all the input guys.  It's just about time to put the car away for the winter and get it up on stands to sort out the brakes, suspension and some front end noises.

I'll have some cleaned up pictures posted later today. 

The paint is pretty well trashed.  I'm going to do my best to polish out most of the imperfections this winter and make it a good "20 footer".

Other plans include ditching the smoked headlights for clears, ditching the clear turn signals for the appropriate amber color and the same with the side markers.

I'm headed to Italy for two weeks on vacation. What are the odds of stopping at any dealerships to get parts or find any parts while I'm over here?

Also, I've been talking with KW for coilovers n has anyone had any experience with them? I've used ST suspension and HandR suspension on all of my other vehicles. Is there a preferred coilover setup that maybe I'm over looking? 

trouble is alot of stuff is no longer avail at the dealer

 

maybe make some orders from german sellers and have them deliver to the hotel?

I can't vouch for Italy but In France this summer I found it hard to get any parts into a VW garage (or any garage for that matter) quicker than Autodoc or Oscaro to a mail address. That and the idea of a walk-in auto parts store seemed pretty much non-existent - I agree with Steveo - best bet would be to order to wherever you're staying.

Checked in with VW Rome and they didn't have much to offer in the line of parts that I'm on the hunt for.

 

Also, the language barrier was a bit tough lol. My Italian is minimal at best but they were as helpful as possible.
