ongoing fuel tank woes

Featured Replies

Broke down and got recovered, fuel dripping from the feed line from tank.

It's stainless overbraided 8mm line. Thought it would outlast the car. But a clip has failed. Dunno if it dragged on the ground or just flexed too much now it is hard and over 10 years old.

Maybe the ethanol has attacked it?

So gone for PTFE teflon tubing.

It's 5/16" (for USA?).

Arrived as 2 x 1m lengths.

Need more jubille clips.

.

The red mouse condom on one end is prep for leak-testing.

i had fuel leak on the filter . it was a new filter before car was parked up for over a year. the petrol inside it was corroding it somehow. on start up, soon as i pressured the fuel system a couple of times, it just cracked.

fuel hoses are something to keep an eye on , think its a mix of Chinese rubbish mislabled as something its not and modern fuel attacks it

i fitted new correct spec (label said so anyway) rubber  lines to mine april 2017 , noticed friday theyre cracked to the point of failing ...needs to be a 6 monthly or sooner check on these from now on , could have been nasty

Was that "premium" high octane fuel?

Could be water below the fuel. Ethanol attracts it more than petrol then the gasoline/ethanol mix forms two layers.

Need to use FuelFit or similar to keep any damp at bay in the vapour, not be absorbed in the liquid.

Finally fitted the replacement hose. Took passenger seat out and fitted using rubber lined stainless p-clips using bolt through floor.

Loads of fun drilling when you can't see a hose below the car. Could not drill from below easily as drill plus 5.5mm bit is longer than the

car was lifted off the floor on a single jack stand to keep last petrol in tank away from tank outlet.

Also fun cutting stainless braided fuel line with an angle grinder 1mm disc throwing sparks. I had disconnected and left to drain for 2 days

and plugged tank tubes to stop any vapour.

Seat back in and fuel refill next.

The old hose had split where bent at tighter angle I think. I'll try to post a pic.

bit of a poor picture but rubber inner was split.

Almost looks torn by twisting , maybe the swage and clip distorted it.

If I roll it between my fingers it is quite cracked on outside of rubber tube.

So not ethanol as that would attack the inside?
