Had my car in at the local VW specialist today, as I'd noticed a strange noise coming from the engine bay. (Comes on after about 2500 rpm when the engine is under load)

He called me this afternoon to say he's almost 100% positive it's a turbo issue - thinks there's too much play with the spindle

 

Now for the fun bit - warranty ran out in early July so unless I can get some kind of goodwill from VW I'm potentially looking at a bill for almost 2 grand!

 

Going in for inspection at dealer Thursday morning so will at least have a second opinion, but after just over 40,500 miles, sticking to service schedules, not taking it over 4000 rpm until fully warmed up & feeding it nothing but V-Power since new I'm feeling a bit wounded.

 

Anyone else had a similar issue with the 1.8 TSI? Or any advice on getting some goodwill from VW?

i heard that shortly after mine was built they revised the turbo design, so maybe that's an angle worth pursuing

Have you had the car serviced at the recommended mileages?

If you have, and especially if the correct oil has been used, then you may be in with a chance of a replacement turbo.

 

I read of someone recently who had major trouble with a washing machine that was out of warranty, they went to their local Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB), who advised them to TELL the manufacturer  that, although it was out of warranty, it was obviously not up to the required standard (I can't remember the exact form of words that they recommended them to use) but the upshot was that their machine was replaced for a new one.

So if you don't have any joy from VW, your local CAB may help out.

Yes I had all servicing done, first 2 at dealer & last 2 by local indep specialist mentioned above.

Dealer offered me some goodwill - parts supplied free but I had to cover labour. 
Add that to the 2 inspections & I’m still out of pocket by nearly £1300, but looking on the bright side it could have been much more, I have a brand new (latest model) turbo installed and my car is back on the road & putting a grin on my face. Think I’d better keep it for a bit longer now though, just to get a bit of value out of it 😄

Just out of curiosity (1) What mileage had the car done prior to the issue. (2) What was the labour charge for fitting new turbo.
