Went over a minor pothole in the pouring rain, just looked like a puddle. Soon after offside rear wheel started making quite a racket. It increased in volume as I went faster, but only upto about 45mph when it went quiet again.

Stopped in a layby to look. All wheel bolts tight, nothing obviously wrong.

 

Drove about 10 miles home. jacked car up this morning to check the bearing and this fell to the ground.

 

Piece of wood road debris trapped between coil spring and tyre tread?

 

Bearing has a bit of play, so I'll tighten it and see if the noise has gone.

Tightened the bearing so washer below the castle nut on hub nut and split pin barely moves left/right levered with a screwdriver. Wheel spins with just a slight scrape from the shoes on the drum.  Will give it a test drive tomorrow.

 

That looks like part of an old ship or boat - are you sure it was a SHALLOW pot hole 😊
