MK2f clocks main beam tell tale bulb

Featured Replies

My 2f Polo has failed it's MOT as the main beam tell tale bulb has blown.

Unlike the rest of the warning lights, which are LEDs, it's a tungsten bulb with a blue cap over it.

Can anyone help me source a replacement bulb?

Or give me directions on fitting an LED in it's place?

  • I found it. It's called electrocon. Loads of random electronics in there. I bought a white 12v led for a pound. It's worth a shot!

If they are still in Stockport there was a shop on Underbank/Lower Hilgate that sold all electrical components they might be able to match up the bulb, or a model shop (trains/aircraft) ask for "grain of wheat bulb" If you replace it with an LED you will also need to put a 435 ohm resistor in series with the LED

I'm in Stockport centre right now. Do you remember the name of the shop?

The last time I went there was around 1996/7 I'm surprised they were still around. Shame they didn't have a blue 12v LED but the colour doesn't really matter it just needs to satisfy the MOT man there is a warning for full beam

Longer than maplin then.

LEDs have cathode and anode pins so you'll need to make sure you fit it right way around.

Usually, just swap around if does not light first time.

Sometimes one side of bottom is flattened. That lead  is negative.

If there's a longer lead it is the positive.

The one i bought has three pins as apparently it's colour changing. But if it's wired on two it should stay white (or I will get a disco when I full beam??)

The car now has an MOT.  The 12v LED works perfectly and is set to red (the other option was green).

The only issue I have is one of my clock illumination bulbs has gone 😞

Would these in white be a viable replacement?
