Hey guys long time without a polo or a visit to this forum. I've just bought a scruffy little 2f coupe. One of the immediate issues is a whole heep of slack in the steering rack. I'm looking for a second hand one to tide me over and I'm wandering if there are any other cars that are cross compatible.

Spelling

Just polos from the plastic bumper MK1 through to the 2f. They're a bit unique.

You -may- be able to take up a little of that slack by tightening the thrust bearing screw on the underside of the rack. Its a pig to get to but you can reach it lying underneath the car with the front on stands. Mine was sloppy around the centre and had a 'click' at ~11 and 1 o'clock and tightening this up (just a smidge, mind) sorted that out. It can only help so far though - if the gear is too worn in the centre then there's not much can be done without a new rack.

 

You'll know if the bearing is too tight if you can no longer turn the wheel to full lock so test each adjustment across the full range.
