Help!! Is this my engine code or am I a muppet?

First post on here hoping someone can help

Bought a 91 polo gt last year for a bargain and due to house move and job change amongst other things I haven't had a chance to give it a good going over. I might be being an idiot but I might be finding out why it was a bargain.. If this is actually the engine code.

Started looking it over today and wanted to check it was actually a 3f. did some searching to find the code location and found a post saying "just where the block meets the head above the alternator mount" so looked there and found this. I have found other posts saying you have to take the distributor off and its inbossed just under there hence the I might be being an idiot.

Looked into it and closest code I can find is maybe a 1s which would be stupid coz it's a diesel block 2.3L but I am reading it 18k90 so I'm thinking I'm looking in the wrong place.

The gearbox does look matched to the engine so if I assumed the box is original to the block could I trace back the engine code through the gearbox code? The rest is a bit of a frankenstein motor so anything is possible.

Any advice appreciated

Is the boot-floor build data sticker absent or unreadable?

Engine code is usually on there.

Cheers for the reply

Where should it be because I looked for it expecting it to be in plain view on the boot floor only thing I didn't do is take the spare out and look under there

Guessing it's been destroyed over the years

That's what I thought... Do you know if I'm looking in the right place on the block? If it's had an engine swap the spec sticker wouldn't be much good except for confirming it's a genuine chassis though would it?

see the bit sticking out on the top right of the pic..could be there but rusted to hell

Cool so just above and to the left of where I was looking, will I need to drop the alternator off to access?

I'll have a look in the morning

Nice one for all the help 👍

can also be under the distributor just under where the head /block join is ...again chances are its rusted away

if it has all the gt injection parts and nip along like 75hp then leave it be ..the 3f engine only had slightly more compression along with all the injection goodies

Sorry mate I couldn't see it so thought you meant on the front side of the head 🙃 dunno why I thought that to be honest probably something to do with the sixth captain Morgan I was drinking at the time 😂

yeah got the digifant ecu so pretty sure that means mpi... Didn't the spi 1.3 use a 'digi' something else ecu?

Only wanted to check the code as a starting point really and so I knew what I was working with 👍 maybe for future plans for power gains buy at the minute It nips along nice so not messing with it just bringing her back up to spec, clearing out the rot and refining bits for handling then enjoying her for what she and all polo's are... A great fun nippy little light weight drive!

Roll on summer!

has it got 4 fuel injectors and is the a vac advance (space ship shaped thing) on the dizzy or no?

  • Author

Yeah mate four injectors and the vac advance is on the fuel rail just left of the throttle body... If my understanding of what Im looking at is right but we already confirmed im a muppet so might not be 😂

that the fuel pressure reg....if its just a plain distributor then yeah its a 3f /gt

  • Author

Yeah one hundred percent the dizzy is plain, I at least know that 😂 nice one and now I know a few of the identifying factors of a 3f/gt 👌 so is the vac advance at the front left of the bay? Just behind the headlight? Is it a metal unit or plastic? Trying to learn as much as possible before the thread dies.

Cheers

3f dont use vac advance , its controlled by the ecu

Cool that's why I couldn't find anything on it in the Haynes then 😁 and the unit I thought you were on about is the purge valve just found it in the Haynes
