Car TAX and MOT exemption advise. - MK1 Polo

Featured Replies

Hi,

This probably isn't the right place for this, but I've looked on the internet and I'm unable to contact DVLA at the moment as i'm not a 'critical worker'

My MK1 Polo has turned 40 this month, May 1980 it was first registered and I'm looking to declare it as 'historic' so it's tax and MOT exempt (it's not driven that much and it's in the garage)

However I've got mixed advice on when you can actually declare this, i'm under the impression it's as soon as your car turns 40 years old but DVLA's site says it's any car built before January 1st 1980 which mine was but wasn't registered in the UK until May 1980.

I was wonder if anyone else has gone through this process either with a Polo or another car.

Thanks.

The info is here https://www.gov.uk/historic-vehicles you'll need a V112 form, and I think you have to do it all at the Post Office.

I rang the DVLA, the guy literally told me to just 'let my MOT expire', then when tax renewal comes up complete the V112 form to declare it exempt.
