Having to engine swap my 1.0L polo due to a snapped cam belt/bent valves. Are any of the other 6n engines (1.4 8v/18v) a straight swap? (e.g no gearbox/loom etc)

Looking at Haynes 4150 Polo 2000 to Jan 2002 it appears that

single cam 999cc AUC, ALD codes and 1390cc AKP, AKK, ANW and AUD engines are all fairly similar with a Marelli ECU coded to the vehicle and a drive by wire throttle using a position sensor at pedal.

 

Mechanically I don't foresee big problems with this swap if you are prepared to 

replace any worn out ancillaries you find on the way.

Surely same loom as cheaper for VW, but Haynes does not show engine management wiring on page 12-21.

 

Whether the ECU is programmed the same for 1 and 1.4 I don't know.

Perhaps 7zap will  reveal if they have same part number.

Swapping ECU means recoding at VW dealer

(or maybe transferring immobilizer and dash cluster ... that is a guess but I can see eBay sellers offering keys and ignition and ECU and dash) 

Perhaps could be overcome with pro VCDS.

 

The double cam  (DOHC 16v not eighteen valve) 1390 engines AHW, APE, AUA (75hp) and AFH,AFK, AQQ and AUB (100hp) codes, have a different Motronic ECU and different exhaust manifold, and larger exhaust.

 

I know the AHW from a Lupo which had a cable throttle. 

Looks like different offside engine mount for double cam too.

Not impossible, but not plug and play.

 

There's a choice of rod or cable linkage gearboxes with different ratios and a road speed sensor but same bell housing pattern I reckon.  I'd use an ETD box with 1.4.

Although cable change is nice when setup properly. If out of alignment it can slip out of gear or refuse to select reverse when hot.

 

I think driveshafts are the same but I can't tell from Haynes.
