UK Type 86 Register for Mk1 Polo, Mk1 Derby & Audi 50

Featured Replies

So back in May I had a look on www.howmanyleft.co.uk to see the number of Type 86's (Mk1 Polo, Mk1 Derby & Audi 50) still taxed or SORN'd in the UK - At that time it showed:

Polo N - 17 taxed & 49 SORN

Polo L - 16 taxed & 36 SORN

Polo LS - 2 taxed & 6 SORN

Polo GLS - 5 taxed & 30 SORN

Polo LX - 4 taxed & 11 SORN

Derby S - 2 taxed & 4 SORN

Derby LS - 2 taxed & 14 SORN

Derby CLS - 0 taxed & 1 SORN

Derby GLS - 2 taxed & 14 SORN

I posted this on Facebook and people started commenting photos of their cars or registration numbers as being one of the taxed or SORN groups for each model. This ended up with me making a great big spreadsheet of all the cars and then trying to locate everyone of them. So far the spreadsheet has 224 vehicles to find and I have been able to track down 124 so not bad. I also made a folder where photos of all the cars I identified where cataloged against a reference number in the spreadsheet - super nerdy yes but efficient.

I looked at hosting the collection on here but you can't edit posts after a certain number of days to update missing details etc and Facebook isn't easy for this type of thing as stuff gets lost or becomes out of sequence.

So in the end I have set up a new Instagram account to host the photos/details. Maybe no-one will ever look at it but I've started uploading to it and so for those interested it is @Type86OC #Type86OC:

Hope to see some more of the SORN ones back out and about!

If anyone is wondering why captions stop part way through it’s because I’ve been put on the Insta naughty step for adding too much similar content in a short space of time so I can’t add captions for 14 days. Must just have been too efficient last night when uploading them fuelled by Henry Westons. I’ll sort them when I can.

Oh how sad - no, not the car.

My sympathies to the family and friends of the young lady killed and the young driver now facing the consequences and the feelings of guilt.

Lampposts at a roundabout in UK are on the passenger side of a right hand drive car; enter too quickly for the conditions and lose grip cornering or braking - there's no airbags or side impact bars to protect your passenger and you in the event of striking one sideways in an old Polo.

I've just seen this very sad news, the 22 year old woman has been identified as Evie Grace Reynolds so my thoughts are with her family and all those involved, including as mentioned above the driver, who must all be having the worst Christmas.

I think there are only two cars matching that description currently on-the-road and the Hemel Hempstead location narrows that to one.

@dvderlm is spot on, many of us drive very old cars with very limited passenger safety features. This applies especially to those of us who swap in more powerful motors even if we upgrade the brakes.

Well, 2 years on from starting the Type 86 Register on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/type86oc/) I got into discussion with the lead for an early water-cooled VW club called ZeOriginals (https://www.instagram.com/zeoriginals/) who, at that time, had a Mk1 Polo. This resulted in an effort to get as many UK Mk1 Polo/Derby or Audi 50 in one place as possible. We didn't manage any Audi 50 but we assembled 8 Mk1 Polo and 4 Mk1 Derby which is the most in many people's memory.

Thanks to all those who took the time to attend, lots of great car chat and fun!

Here are a selection of photos...

As Requested!

Caffeine&Machine Club Night for the Type 86 Register Mk1 Polo, Mk1 Derby & Audi 50

Monday 24th July 17:00-22:00

Reserved parking exclusively for Type 86 vehicles outside the front of the building, let’s do this!

Ticket cost is the usual C&M £10 per car (not per person) but because these are Club tickets they are redeemable for £5 off food/drink.

Also you can book rooms at a 20% discounted Club rate (FYI if you book accommodation then you do not need to purchase a ticket, you just show your room booking confirmation on arrival). Hopefully having accommodation means some people with greater distances to cover can split the round-trip over two days.

Please drop me a message once you have booked so I can get an idea of numbers for a little Type 86 thank-you treat we are working on!

The link to purchase tickets or book accommodation at the discounted rate can be found in Facebook group “Mk1 Polo, Derby & Audi 50 Owners” or by sending @type86oc a message on Instagram.
