manual choke cable

Featured Replies

Hello, first post in a long while... I've had a search through the forum to find answers but no luck (doesn't help I have a short attention span). Apologies if this should be in the engine section, I couldn't decide.. and soz if it's been covered time and time again - I did check the faq pages and I've read most of the fitting bike carbs thread. Maybe it's just a stupid question other people don't need to ask but I want a good understanding of what I'm doing before I buy the parts.

I've got bike carbs on my mk2, which was previously auto choked. I'm planning on attaching a manual choke cable, we all know why this time of year. I understand that there is a blank cap in the dash where a manual choke can attach, and I've found the appropriate choke handle on heritage.

I'm wondering whether I should get the corresponding choke cable (also on heritage) with the rectangular part on it (does that bit lock the cable?), or whether I'll be able to attach a generic cable?/ Would it be able to lock in place? I'm trying to keep the cost down of course, and generic ones are easier to find for cheaps but I don't wanna buy one to find out later that I need to fork out for a proper one as well. If I get the oem cable are there any other fixings or parts I need for it to operate properly, or is it all lurking there under the dash? parts diagrams show a few little extra bits, do I need those? I tried taking the cap off but it seems to be securely attached (screwed in?) from behind, don't wanna take the whole dash of unless (/until) I have to.

I have considered getting a generic one and just attaching it anywhere, but I'd really like to keep the authentic look if possible, even if it does cost a bit.

For reference I am fairly good at tinkering / making / fixing / hacking things but I do not have a mechanical background so my knowledge is limited.

genuine one does stay locked where you put it , also has provision to operate the dash light

doubt you will be able to use a genuine handle with a universal cable

okay, thanks! I'll look out for a genuine one then.. fat chance of finding one in a scrappy I'm guessing, but I might try.

ah okay! tbh I'm not certain that it would fit but assumed it would with the carbs being in a similar place..hopefully I'm not wrong 😕 How much would you want for yours?

looking around online, I think I would be able to modify it with a longer cable to make it long enough... I think 😬
