Hoping someone more knowledgeable than me might be able to help.

 

The radio (Sony original head unit) in my 1998 6N Polo has packed up. On further inspection I found that the switched ignition +12v feed remains dead at all points on the ignition. I get power from the 12v constant, but not the switched. I changed the 15A fuse to no affect. 

 

Any help anyone can give would be greatly appreciated.

The switched supply should be there any time the key is in the ignition (any position) so if the fuse is OK it's likely the ignition switch has failed (not uncommon)

Well, for anyone else who experiences the same problem in the future:

 

The problem was indeed the ignition switch that had failed. The part was £45 at VW and the replacement airbag bolts were £2. I decided that the work was a bit complicated for me (immobiliser and airbag removal as well as drilling out existing bolts in the dash). I took it to the local dealership. The total bill (including the courtesy car) was £200. But the job is probably do-able yourself if you've got the time, tools, skill, and patience.

P.S. I diagnosed the problem with the ignition switch by using a wire with croc clips to jump the 12V supply to the switched live output and testing for 12V at the radio harness switched live pin.
