Hi everyone, about to change the base insulator block for the carb on my Polo Mk2 as the factory one has perished and doesn't seal properly.

 

Any other parts you recommend I should change since i'm going to have the carb off? Do I change any other gaskets or hoses?  I'm not going as far as rebuilding the carb as it works just fine - why fix what aint broken!

 

Also the vapour eliminator seems to have a crack so I will be changing that as well.

Thanks! There seem to be a couple of base insulator blocks available for the Polo Mk2. Mine is an 86C HZ1 from 1987. Any idea which one I need? I'll find out when I take it off of course but was hoping to order before. Link 1  Link 2  Link 3  Link 4

What cubic capacity/code is your engine? 
 

if it’s 1987 and  a 1043cc HZ engine with a Pierburg 1B3 carb(orWeber 32TLA) then it’s link 4, VAG 030129765C.

I'm not sure actually. How can I find out? I just checked the registration document and it doesn't say...

The V5 registration document should give the CC of the engine, under the ‘cylinder capacity’ entry. The letter prefix on the engine number, also shown on the V5, should also give the code.My 89 Breadvan has the entries of ‘1043’ and the engine number begins ‘HZ’

 

You can also check the engine number on the cylinder block. It should be stamped on a flat section of the cast iron block face above the alternator, to the left of the exhaust manifold.

 

Alternatively use this UK GOV site and key in your reg to get the CC( it won’t tell you the engine number using this method)

This is dependant on the info held by DVLA being accurate. It is possible  someone could have previously done an engine swap to a different capacity and then advised them, which would be a bit naughty!

 

Or...take the air cleaner lid off and post a photo on this forum of the carburettor.  That will help identify the carb you have fitted(and likely the engine).

I'm actually in France as is the car. :) The car's at the garage. I'll go take some pictures and post them. 

I also read your post about the replacement carb base insulator blocks failing... doesn't sound too promissing...

Ahhh,sorry, your profile says London for your location, so I thought you were in the UK.

 

Yes, my experience of the rubber mounting isn’t good. The replacements seem to fail regularly and it isn’t just me that seems to have had issues.

 

All I can say is, go for a named brand and hope for the best!

Here is a photo of the carb. Are you able to identify it? It's a Pierburg/Weber I take it?

Have a close look at your photo, especially where Weber Italy is written on it, and perhaps conclude that it probably isn't a Pierburg. 

haha ok I thought Weber and Pierburg were the same thing as I've seen them quoted together. Which insulator block do I need then?

That’s a Weber 32TLA so you need the equivalent of VAG part 030129765C.

OK that's lucky the Weber and Pierburg use the same insulator block it seems!
