The simplest cure may be to attach the earth cable to another point on the chassis.

The important things to remember are:

(1) The battery negative (-) needs to be connected to the engine AND to the chassis/body

(2) If you need to use a longer cable in order to make the connection, be sure that the cross sectional area (thickness) of the new cable is at least the same as the old one.

(3) You need to have a bare metal connection to the engine/body/chassis, this may well having to scrape away some paint in order to make a good connection. Once the connection is made, you can apply a little petroleum jelly or grease to the area to prevent rusting..

 

It is not essential, but it is good practice to place a copper washer between the cable lug and the area it connects to.
