I have two ideas

  • corroded bulb holders
  • combined brake and tail bulbs 5Wand 21W filaments in one bulb fitted the wrong way round

Needs a multimeter to test there's 12volt reaching the bulb and low/no resistance to earth.

Thanks I have a good earth connection. With a volt meter I get no voltage on the brake lights circuit on both light clusters and high level brake light .

The wiring loom has been followed from the back of the car to where it goes up under the dash in the passengers foot well and tested with a continuity tester.
still nothing

12v at the brake light switch?

Is the switch activated by pedal on mk8?

Sorry, not familiar with newer models.

The Pedal switch signals the engine ECU  and that sends the signal via the CANbus to the onboard power supply unit and that outputs to the brake lights

The pedal switch has both a 12v supply (pin 4 Blue/Yellow wire from fuse #33) and a ground ( pin 2 Brown wire)
