Hi I am fixing my project breadvan and on one of the calipers a spring broke and I dont know what they are called, and I cant find any. Is it necessary? Can i buy it somewhere?

One spring is broken and one isnt!

Must be the old 10mm solid disk VW1 calipers with pads not much bigger than a 3M Postit note.

 

Brake caliper retaining spring, or anti rattle spring.

VAG part 823698445 kit has the wire spring and the crucifix shaped one and new pins.

Are you really asking if a braking part is needed?

From memory the spring passes through the pins, so the pads cannot possibly come loose.

(long time since I changed pads on VW1)

 

The tiny disk locating screw is the only part of the brakes you can do without, as 4 huge wheelnuts clamp the disk to the hub.

But it it is much less annoying changing wheels when even that tiny screw is present. 

There's also a locating spring...

Haha yes apparently I asked! 😀 Thanks for the specific answers, I will look into it! 

Unless you're going for absolute originality, it's well worth swapping from the old girling calipers to the VW1 calipers from a later MK2. They're the same disc size, but have a much larger pad contact. 

 

I am so frustrated, why can't I find an identical spring on the internet! Is this part that rare?

The calipers are basically a superseded part. I might have a pair in a drawer somewhere, will see what I can do....
