MK2F 1993 1.3 AAV problems setting ignition timing/rough idle when cold?

Featured Replies

Hello all.

I've recently purchased a 93 1.3Spi breadvan. I am currently having issues with poor idle when cold.  The ignition timing is currently set to about 25 degrees before TDC. I have tried setting the ignition timing to 5 +/- 1 BTDC as per a Haynes manual. When this is done it will run when Hot but hesitant to Rev. But when engine is cold it will not idle or sometimes start unless I revert back to the original timing.

It has recently had new:

Plugs, dizzy, coil, HT leads, Blue temp sensor, lambda, fuel pump, filters.

I have checked for the correct resistance on all the components on the throttle body and Blue temp sensor and all are within spec. i have checked all wires going to the ECU for breaks.

I have also verified that the engine is timed correctly.

After all of this I can still not set ignition timing correctly.

Any suggestions will be much appreciated.

correct dizzy ?

are you sure of the timing marks for belt position

do you trust the timing light

not convinced theres room on theadjustment slots for 25deg

This is the dizzy that was fitted Distributor for 1.0-1.6: 030905237AX | Heritage Parts Centre UK

Yeah all marks line up on crank and cam as they should. And rotor arm points to plug 1

Timing light is old and cheap I believe. So guess could be an issue.

And 25deg is a guess. its definitely a long ways from 5 deg

Cheers

not being rude but you know the difference between the 0tdc and ign mark on the belt cover ?

The 0 mark is used for setting engine timing (belt) and the Z mark is used for ignition timing?

yes!

if you set the belt right , rotor arm adjusted to point at the notch on the housing it should be near enough 5-6deg ...good enough to run around

cant think of what can be going wrong

Crank aux pulley is 128mm diameter, so 402mm circumference.

25 degrees advancevwould be 28mm around the outside.

When setting timing...

Are you removing the hose that comes from crankcase at the air box/ injectors?

(and plugging where  it joins)

That's recommended in 'So wird's gemacht' for the Polo page 196.

It also claims that the similar AAU Mono Motronic needs VW dealer code reader for basic setting, which surprises me.

Oil temperature should be at least 80c.
