Hey guys, some help please. I really want to make my 2003 Polo more livable by adding remote central locking.. But at the moment I don't even have BASIC central locking. I always thought that it's normal for my Polo that I have to lock each door individually. To unlock the back door I need to unlock the front then reach behind. Same for locking, reach behind. Even the driver side door doesn't lock anything else than itself. Then lately I started thinking that this couldn't really be normal. Sure at least the driver side door should lock or unlock all doors.

 

Can anyone please confirm that this is a problem with the door lock mechanism and not the way it's supposed to be? Nigel mentioned microswitches that go bad. Does every door have one or just the main driver side door? To see how much of the car I'd have to disassemble.  Or is it really possible that every door is just like that and that I'd have to rewire every door for remote central locking to work. Because that just won't happen in a 18 year old car.

 

Please help cause the wife really wants remote locking when she's using it to drive the kids around and locking every door individually is driving her nuts.

Hello Signalus.

This car may never have been had central locking at all.  If you look in the parts catalogue, there is a version of door lock that is described by the PR code 4F0, which translates as "mechanical locking system".

If this is the case, you may find that build code listed on the sticker in the boot near the spare wheel.

 

If you don't see that code or the sticker is missing, another way of checking is by looking at the part of the door loom that goes through the inner metal panel towards the lock.  If it only has two wires rather than about 5 or 6, then it must be this type of un-motorised lock. The only electrical part of such locks is the microswitch that senses door open/closed.

 

 

I'm absolutely gutted. It's a basic spec car for sure, but that's it's this basic...

 

Do you know Pete, if I wanted to add REMOTE central locking to this car, how much work is it, knowing it's so basic? Change and wire each lock in the car? Then proceed with the procedure in the stickied FAQ?

Oh dear, I though that might be what you would find.

I think it would be a very big job to change to central locking.  All the door locks, all the door wiring looms. Probably would need to add the wires from the a- and b-pillar connections towards the central convenience module, which may not even exist in a car without C/L?

 

Not worth trying, I would say.  Sell and buy one that already has remote C/L is the best plan.  ☹️

Thank you Pete so much. Ill keep the car as it only has 47k miles and is mint. Just sad that its so basic but now I dont have to shell out 200+ euros to upgrade it. Changing everything would be closer to 500 I suspect.

Can we, for the sake of argument, try to hash out what I would need in total to get this done? I'm mental to even think about it but OK.

 

So, every door including the rear lid needs a new locking mechanism.
