Assembling mk2 engine but picking parts from a mk2f

Featured Replies

Hi there,

I'm assembling an 1.3 MH engine from a 91 mk2 (chassis number 80-M-xxxxxx). I found a 92 mk2F having a 1.3 MH which has a lower mileage and a better condition head than the former.

I'm considering to restore and use the latter MH engine in my mk2 or at least use the mk2F head with my mk2 cylinder block.

I can see some differences between the 2 engines though. So I wanted to get your opinions and help to clear my doubts (feel free to correct my English, I hope I'm improving).

Camshaft and crankshaft pulley and water pump :

- Those one the mk2F have more teeth than those of the mk2. So I believe the tuple camshaft pulley, crankshaft pulley, water pump should always have the same kind of teeth in order to use the right toothed belt (should I just say timing belt). I was expecting my mk2 to have the same pulley than the mk2F because its chassis number but that was not the case...

- So if I wanted to only use the mk2F head on the mk2, I just need to use the mk2 camshaft pulley. Am I right ?

Water pump and thermostat and radiator :

- The mk2F thermostat and radiator are different from the mk2. For example the mk2F has a hose from the coolant reservoir to the thermostat whereas the same hose goes to the radiator on the mk2. I'm not sure if the heater hoses are the the same.

- Can I use the mk2F engine but using the mk2 thermostat and radiator ? The mk2F coolant reservoir mounting is completely different from the mk2's. I also wonder if there would be a cooling performance benefit using the cooling parts of the mk2F here. I believe the water pumps have quite the same performance even if they have different teeth types (one would run a little faster than the other ?).

Even though I think keeping most of the mk2 compatible parts around the mk2F engine would be better to make the engine bay look more genuine and less confusing.

  • you need to keep all the pullys /belt /water pump as a set ...so yes swap the mk2 cam pully onto the new head   thermostat housings just swap over so keep the mk2 one , keep the mk2 rad

  • if you want more cooling ?  3f dual core radiator would be best upgrade with 2 speed fan

biggest downside to this is the mk2f has an electric fuel pump so the head isnt drilled to accept the manual one and the cam has no fuel pump drive  ...you could swap the cam and drill the head if you wanted

Hi @steveo3002 Thanks for your response 👍

Pulley parts : Good to know the pulley / belt / water pump as a set is interchangeable between these engines

Cooling/Coolant parts : I agree I have a preference keeping the mk2 ones. Just for my understanding, do you know if the mk2f radiator and thermostat housing are compatible with the mk2 coolant reservoir ?

Fuel pump : The mk2 and mk2f engines I have are both MH engines. They both use mechanical fuel pump mounted on the head and were fitted with a Pierburg 2E3 carb. I think the electrical fuel pump was fitted in the mk2f for engines codes 2G and AAV which were also 1.3 engines but fitted with single point injection (just like the 45hp AAU). Though they had the same power than the MH, they were probably easier to adjust and maintain than the pierburg.

oh we never got a mk2f with carb here

the mk2 (round lights) radiator will have a thin hose going to the coolant tank , the mk2f (square light) doesn't have this at the radiator it comes from the thermostat housing - you can mix and match it somewhat some models have different hoses

i have mk2 spec engine and rad  with mk2f coolant flange - blanked the outlet on the mk2 radiator and needed mk2f heater hoses , theres at least 2 coolant flanges for the mk2f...gt/g40 and spi  ...gt/g40 has less outlets

just use the coolant flange from the original car...it will all match up

if you want more cooling ?  3f dual core radiator would be best upgrade with 2 speed fan

Shame...I totally forgot about the radiator outlet. I believe this is the part which forces air to the radiator from the front of the car (if I'm not wrong). Your 3f radiator performance tip is good to know. For now I'm looking for reliability rather than performance but you gave me really useful information if for example I can't use my mk2 or mk2f radiator. In my case, the mk2f radiator is deformed but not sure if it's leaking though. That was due to a shock at the bottom front of the car (not sure if "deformed" was the right word to use here). That's not an issue for now since I'm currently restoring the mk2. I was considering buying the mk2 a new radiator but now realizing that its old radiator is not meant to replace the broken one in the mk2f (mk2f coolant tank hose goes to thermostat whereas mk2 radiator expects the tank hose). I guess I'll also have to spend money buying a mk2f radiator if restoring the mk2f without exotic mixin.

I've never seen a 1.3 mk2f with a single point injection like 2G or AAV here in France. I've only seen carb and 3F and G40 and once seen a 1.3 single point but in a polo 6N.
