Hi all,

 

it’s been a fair while since my last visit to the site, but I’m returning once again to ask for your never emptying fountain of knowledge and advice.

 

Currently my breadvan is lowered on what I believe is TA Technix shocks and springs. The ride is awful and I hate it. 

 

As I’m trying to restore the car and undo all the annoying things that the previous owner has done to it, I've bought new Bilstein front and rear shocks. These I believe are relatively decent OE replacements.

 

I need to source suitable OE replacement springs. Can I use Bilstein for this too?

 

Finally, are there any other components that I require before I change the suspension over? For example: bellows/boots, top mounts etc? Or will the currently installed parts suffice and I can just swap them over.

be an ideal time to fit new bump stops and top mounts

I am currently in this exact situation and I know I need front struts to fit the shocks, I am also assuming I will need new covers for the shocks etc. Did you manage to get it restored to stock? If so what else do you have to get?

Hi, apologies for the late response.

 

in short, no I’ve not managed to get around to replacing my suspension yet. Numerous other projects and money has been sparse lately.

 

However, I do now have all the relevant parts that I need. I’m removing the horrible TA Technix stuff and I’ve bought Bilstein shocks and springs and I’ve bought Lemforder top mounts. I don’t think I will require anything else. You are right in thinking that you will need struts for the front shocks though.

 

it is my aim to get the work done very soon though. I’m currently attempting to locate and repair a vacuum leak as my car is idling and performing poorly. Once this is done, I’ll look at fixing the suspension

I’ve decided to part exchange my ta’s for standard struts with all the components present and £140, this will cover the cost of new shocks and springs, my plan is to thyme strip down the struts I receive and replace anything that looks like it needs it and obvious stuff like top mounts when I fit the new shocks n springs, I’m hoping to do the same with the rear but need to find someone to part ex. 
 

I’ve gone through the effort of listing all the parts using parts diagrams I’ve found online, the fronts are around 400 for a full setup and the rears just shy of 250. Some parts are readily available others not so much, things like spring discs can be a pain to find, this is why I went for part ex on an old system, itl all be there even if it needs replacing, some parts are like hens teeth so it seems the safest option to me. 
 

I’d recommend joining some of the polo Facebook groups if you’re on there, people will snap up your coilovers if you’re selling them, I’ve had a lot of interest in mine and I wasn’t putting them for sale only asking about prices
