2000 mk3.  Instrument cluster completely stopped working except indicator arrows. No speedo, no fuel gauge, no trev counter, no ignition lights, no back light.  Fusebox on top of battery terminal was loose and all electrics failed.  Tightened connection and everything came back except instrument cluster. Any ideas? Which fuses should I check? Cheers Jimbo

As you have a 6N2 we refer to them as a MK5 not MK3 but if you state 6N2 people will know what model.

 

Does the radio switch ON when the key is in the ignition swith ? if it does that would rule out the "S" contacts in the ignition switch Fuses 16 & 27 both 5 amp are the supplies to the Speedo unit 

Thanks for your reply nige8021. My mistake re model number. It is a mk3 from 2000. Not sure if your reply relates to that model but yes radio is working.  The only other thing I noticed is that the light left on buzzer has also stopped working.  Any further comments gratefully received. 

Just done my homework on the model ... its a mark III face-lift which as you say enthusiasts call mk5 or 6N2 .... sorry my bad : ) will try 2 x fuses and report back.

I've replaced both fuses 16 and 27 but no change.  Any other ideas or alternatively any recommendations for an auto electrician? I live in North Shropshire so anything within 50 mile radius of that really. Thanks

VW do call it a MK3 but if you look at this https://www.clubpolo.co.uk/forum/207-polos/  it shows the more logical listing of the different models/years and the fuse information was based on the year & chassis allocation (6N2)

 

There is another fuse # 11 5 amp it wasn't shown on the wiring diagram for the speedo that's why I missed it  

 

If the fuse isn't the problem it might be the internal voltage regulator has fried due to a spike in voltage when you reconnected but normally they are pretty robust You can pick up a used speedo from eBay quite cheaply just try and find one with roughly the same mileage as you can only increase the reading with the correct diagnostic kit (VCDS) 

Thanks again. Changed #11 fuse. No change.  Then disconnected battery and joined leads to drain the charge from the system and reconnected and renewed the 4 main fuses in the box on the battery.  This had some effect ... the LCD displays had some random lines on them and the fog light symbol lit up when switched on. But nothing more. Think I'll have to resort to professional help.
